Just watched it. It was as dumb as expected (I like bad movies). But it also had one of the genuinely coolest scenes I've ever seen on film, late in the movie. It really got me, especially being prior Navy. I didn't know about this so won't ruin it, but that alone makes it worth the viewing.

You talking about the very end essentially?
Posted on 12/4/12 at 11:23 pm to Tayday
The lead up to and the last action sequence.

Yah, it was a good scene. I like crappy movies as well, I go to be entertained and was, don't really care about the acting too much.

It won't bother me at all if you ruin the ending because I can promise you I will never watch it

Spoilers
I knew that old veterans were in it, and they were in a scene early in the movie during a ceremony on the Missouri. Well near the end the only available ship left is the old Missouri battleship, but none of the current sailors have a clue how to run it. The old veterans who worked it in real life, many of whom still take care of the Missouri, saved the day by taking her to battle one last time. I bet they had a blast. It was great to see those guys in action, and a great way to honor them.

Movie was a total letdown. I didn't expect Casablanca, but goddamn. Just terrible plot, terrible acting, and horrific dialogue. Rihanna is the worst casting job I've ever seen in a movie. They could've went to L.A. and cast any random aspiring actress for a tenth of the price and gotten better results.

Those aliens had sweet spiky goatees.

I expected terrible plot and acting. It had Taylor what's his name. I had no idea that was Rihanna.
I would have loved to be in the pitch meeting for this movie:
Guy: I've got this killer idea. It's a movie about the game battleship. We'll have battleships and destroyers. References to grids and E11. Hit. Sunk. All that. It'll be nostalgiac and action packed.
Exec: nah, sounds boring. Get out.
Guy: ok ok. What if instead of ships, there were aliens??
Exec: sold.

Rihanna is in it. Will not watch.

Guy: and the aliens travelled all the way from deep space in a matter of days. they land in the ocean, in the middle of massive US Navy war games, and sit there. The alien ships just sit there. When the navy attacks, the spacecraft frickin bounce on the water and blows up the naval ships with mortars--bombs shaped like wine bottles. So awesome. And then the alien spacecraft are destroyed by a 70 year old battleship manned by 80 year old men who sit all day on said battleship even during alien invasions. An the decommissioned battleship will be fully stocked with live ammunition. And Rihanna will be fighting the aliens too for some reason.
Exec: Sold.

This movie was about 5 movies combined into one... It was like the production had to use 5 scripts to get out of contracts with writers.

I couldn't decide if Rhianna is that shitty of an actor, or if her character was a sociopath.

It gross like 350 million worldwide, budget of 250. I think those are the numbers, anyway they made a considerable amount of coin so they rich.

I have to admit, the way they did the "board game" scene was very creative, and probably somewhat plausible.
And the end "They aint sinking this battleship."

Yes I think it's one of my new favorite bad movies.
I liked how the alien rounds actually looked like the game pieces, and even sunk into the hull like them.
Except the plausible part: I didn't understand why neither they nor the aliens had radar or night vision. Also their guns can fire 23 miles but had to do a close up broadside volley. They had to fire blind, but could still communicate with all the buoys.

I actually started a thread about this months ago, cuz I never even made the connection to the game until the credits rolled and I saw "Based on the board game by MB"
I wondered WTF kinda technology would shoot those bad assed saw-balls, but only come up with these bottle like rounds...then it clicked.

yeah it wasnt a great movie but whenever they played "Thunderstruck" in preparing that old battleship it jacked me up! Thunderstruck saved that movie

This means it lost money on the theatrical run.
Theater owners get a nice cut of the boxoffice, add marketing costs, etc, and you end up with a loss. I'm sure they will make money when they sell DVDs and the TV rights.
