Not sure if these quotes have been posted...not reading the 20-page thread...

"We wanted a place to play. We've been going to bowl games for several years now and had already been to the Independence Bowl.
"We turned down a bowl in Houston to play in the Independence Bowl (in 2008). After playing in the Poinsettia Bowl last year, we felt the natural progression was to play on New Years Day."
quote:
"We felt like we had good opportunities, but when Northern Illinois moved into the BCS, that trickled down and the opportunities dried up," Van De Velde said. "Oklahoma knocked Texas out of the Cotton Bowl, the Liberty Bowl chose Iowa State, and we didn't have a place to go.
"You'd have to talk to the Liberty Bowl about their selection."
quote:
"We got caught in a situation as an at-large," Van De Velde said. "There were only a certain number of spots, and the two we were looking at were closed off."

Is he on dope? What was he expecting a bid from the Rose?
He should have followed the saying, "It's better to keep your mouth shut, rather than opening it and removing all doubt"

I feel really bad for the players.

So he blames the Liberty Bowl. And he's also said they weren't given the time by the Indy Bowl to let things play out...clearly none of this is his fault. Passing blame isn't making this any better.

Y'all went 9-3 and fricking 3rd in the god awful WAC and yet your delusional fanbase and AD believes the team deserves a New Years Day bowl.

I gotta be honest -- they probably deserve a trip this year more than Purdue or Minnesota do. (ignoring all the contractual conference tie-ins)

You do realize that the Heart of Dallas bowl is on New Year's Day, don't you? I mean, it's on ESPNU. So as far as being a true New Year's Day bowl, it's not, and I don't know why these stupid bowls aren't forced to be done with before New Year's Day, but truth be known, a bowl that Tech thought they might go to is played on New Year's Day.
If the day the game was played on mattered anymore, the SEC would have lobbied hard to get UGA in the Compass Bowl. I think they play on something like Jan. 6th.

Yes, lot of blame to go around...
Northern Illinois
Indy Bowl
Cotton Bowl
Liberty Bowl
Gremlins
Murphy's Law
That's about it.

Is it possible that La Tech could lose money on a trip to the Independence Bowl?
I know there are several teams every year that actually pay for the privelege of participating in bowl games, even to the point of paying for tickets for their bands to attend and play as halftime entertainment.

What's your take on that quote kobe?

he was thinking he could get them in the Heart of Dallas Bowl vs Purdue.
his complaint that Ohio would have been there for the Indy is stupid. Ohio would have been snapped up by the Little Caesar's Bowl over Central Michigan.
an 8-4 Ohio is MUCH easier team to promote for your bowl than a 6-6 Central Michigan.

He should have just kept his mouth shut. What an idiot.
Holding out for a New Years Day Bowl?! Please don't fire him. He fits in perfect there.

Of course they do, as a team. As a program they don't due to the head of the program being a complete arrogant dumbass.

Indy Bowl has a $1.1M payout which is higher than the lowest bowls. The lowest payout is the New Orleans Bowl at $500K and then there are several at $750K.
Seeing as how Tech is what, 50 miles away, and already plays a game just about every year there voluntarily as part of their regular schedule I don't see how they could lose much if any $.
In comparison, these bowls that Tech was hard for: Liberty Bowl payout is $1.4M and Heart of Dallas Bowl is $1.1M...same as Indy and a little further away (if you are pinching pennies).

He's changed his mind on this. I guess having this many people mock you and call for your job will cause a man to look for a scapegoat though.
