Congrats
They did finally catch on to the gift card at supermarkets loophole so now they only give you 6% of the first 6000 you spend at groceries per year
That's a good bit though
Walmart will not qualify as a grocery, just so you know, and racetrack has the cheapest gas usually but doesn't accept Amex
Good luck

yea that sucks but owell... i am single and cheap so 6k won't be a big deal as i will likely have to spend extra money to get there... which i will prob do with gas cards..

You can pick 2 categories for 5% cash back.
I have read about that one on a few sites... some people say they use it to pay utility bills... power, cable, internet, phone... whatever... my thought is typically the power company charges a fee to use a CC... so how does that make the return worth it?
also i have requested a sticky for this thread... i think it should stay around for people in the future as CC is a very popular topic.

Didn't want to start a new thread so I'll ask here.
I have two credit cards: I got one in college and recently got one through Best Buy. I have relatively low limits for each (less than $1000). I'm trying to build my credit and was looking into one of these for gas/groceries. My question is which card is the best for me as I will probably not be approved for a lot given my limited credit history?
Side question. Is it better to just get one of these reward cards where I can use it on any gas station or getting a specific card for say, Shell or Chevron?
Excuse my ignorance on this as I am young and trying to learn all this mumbo jumbo.

The best rewards cards can have pretty tough guidelines for approval
The penfed platinum card is great for gas and you wont be tied to a brand, just have to donate to a military charity on the penfed site to become a member
The Amex blue cash is great all around but they are very stringent on approvals

i suggest you apply for the amex blue card... the one without the fee.. you prob won't get the preferred card...
if you get it just use it for a fee months then CALL them and apply for the preferred card if you feel like you need it.
with your limited credit history i wouldnt go out and apply for two random cards in a short window.
if you don't get the amex blue card try for the citi forward card.
This is a good site to compare the cards

What's this loophole? And is there a loophole for Sam's club since they don't take visas?

i think he was just saying you got a good card...
but the loophole was people would go to grocery stores and buy their limits worth of gift cards to other places... be it restaurants, gas, old navy... whatever...
basically giving them 6% back on everything.

yes.
go to walmart and buy a gift card for how ever much you need... typically walmart and sams are right next to each other so you don't have to go out of your way.

Does a gift card purchase at wal mart count as a grocery purchase?

no walmart isn't considered grocery by amex

Amex also only gives 3% to certain gas stations, usually the large oil company stations rather than individually owned stations

Question to all. Planning on buying a house within the next 12 months. Okay to get my wife to apply for her own credit card? I have her as an authorized user on a couple cards and her score isn't great.
Want her to get that southwest card to get the $500 in amazon or $850 for flights.

I doubt she will get that southwest card unless she has good credit.. and if your credit is that good it won't hurt you enough to matter about getting the against your house..

This is pretty freaking awesome, but you can only apply at a branch and there are none within 100 miles of me.

Amex Gold Premier Rewards and its not close. I used the rental protection this weekend. We spilled a whole bottom of Jim Beam and knocked a dent in the front. AMEX covered it. Cost me $20.
But even if we're talking actual rewards...anything short of paying actual cash...AMEX charge cards are up there.
$175 fee though. Worth it in my opinion. First year is free.

I would recommend the Bank of America Platinum Plus...otherwise known as...the MBNA LSU Card from 1999-2004. They gave them out to everybody with $500 or $1000 limits and slowly built up. No rewards though just credit history. And its easy to qualify. Like 10% interest.

I am leaning towards Changing to this at the end of this year... Really wish they had a Platinum version though
