So I usually get a $1k in cash for Christmas between my family and the inlaws.

I'm thinking I may get a new handgun for home/personal defense, maybe concealed carry at some point.

What would the OB purchase? I currently have a 357 magnum in the ole nightstand.
P.S. I don't have to spend the total 1k on this purchase.

Need more criteria. What kind of pistol/revolver are you wanting?

If you want to CC with it, Springfield XDS. When KR shows up I'm sure he'll have a good CC 1911 recommendation.

Those are two different pistols in my opinion.

A concealed carry pistol is not the best choice for home defense.

You would serve yourself better to get a good/great CC Pistol. The Glock 26 or similar Baby Glock, Springfield Armory XDs (.45ACP single stack) or that Kahr. Then buy you a shotgun with the difference for keeping it real inside the house.

I wouldn't figure a fella with a pair of guns like you tote around would need any other protection.

Get the HK45 Compact or the P30 in .40. Very pricey, but you won't find a more ergonomic or better shooting handgun (unless you look into 1911s). Everything else feels like your gripping a brick after owning those

So you want stopping power for something you could carry or use in home defense, less than 1k?

Glock 19. You know I wouldn't steer you wrong.

Hell, meet me at Precision one evening and I'll let you try a plethora of options.

You already have a .357 magnum which is almost universally accepted to be the best man stopping handgun caliber on earth. Why not get a compact .357 magnum and start conceal carrying?

Good advice. Or if you want, consider a semi-auto 9mm instead of compact 357 mag for cc.

Glock 19 for CC and 20 guage youth model remington 870 for home. 2 birds 2 stones 1K.

Also good advice. You could also substitue a 12 gauge shotgun for home defense, but the youth model would be a better choice if a smaller framed SO or teens may need to handle it.

The Glock 19 is always a good choice for a self defense gun. I'd suggest one thing to consider, though: will you be pleased cc a double stack mag handgun or will you rather have a single stack mag handgun. Guns like the M19 (and most service handguns) have double stack mags to increase mag capacity. OTOH, this makes the grip of the gun much thicker. Some find it more of a problem to cc a double stack mag handgun. There are now a bunch of single stack mag handguns that are designed for the cc crowd. Not only should you handle (and preferably shoot) the possible new gun before purchsing it, but you should also try to determine beforehand what a double stack gun feels like w/ cc and whether that suits you.

If you're interested in a single stack handgun, there are a bunch of them, including (I'll just list the 9mm's, but some are in 40 as well):

Kahr CM9
Kahr PM9 (a more expensive version of the CM9)
Kahr CW9 (a no frills, slightly bigger version of the CM9)
Kahr MK9
Kel-Tec PF9
Diamondback DB9
Bersa BP9cc
Kimber Solo
Beretta Nano
Sig 938/290
Walther PPS
SCCY Industries CPX

ETA: Taurus 709 Slim is another single stack 9mm.
