Tell me then, what IS needed to win games?
I would take an overwhelming talent advantage everytime. Nick Saban, coaching at N. Texas, wouldn't stand a chance against a Curly Hallman coached Alabama team.
Do you honestly believe great coaching is need to secure every victory?

Last year saban did it.. Didn't have to look too far

Not altogether great if you have a team that put more talent on the field in 11 of the 12 games
Did Nick Saban underachieve because he had more talent than every one on his schedule yet still lost a game?
Games aren't played on paper. The other teams have scholarship athletes and coaches who want to win just as much. Sometimes the other team plays better and wins. It's why they chalk the field and play the game.
Ragging on the coaches for losing to the number 2 and 4 teams is mindblowing.

Yeah
Funny how no one mentions that

In a word, yes.

Fair.
Demanding perfect seasons in college football is foolish. But if people want to live in disappointment, I tip my hat to them.

So even great coaches underachieve from time to time
No surprise there. So why does everyone freak out when Miles loses a game he shouldn't lose?
I understand it's frustrating to watch it unfold in real time particularly when there are some questionable game management decisions
But at some point you have to acknowledge greatness. This consistency over an 8 year period does not happen without solid coaching. Coaching consists of more than just gameday coaching.

Do it this way: plug in any other coach in 2005 and what would have now? Better record? More NCs?
I think a few coaches wouldve done better, although Les has done great.
I'd take Harbaugh, Saban, Patterson for sure. I think any of those would've done better than Les. MAYBE some guys like Brian Kelley, Butch Jones, Greg Schiano. Those are good coaches who never had the resources Les has.

Of course you're right on that account. Its not that perfection is expected game after game, year after year. Lesser teams do upset stronger teams all the time. Its just when it does happen there has to be an accounting.
Even though it happens, lesser teams shouldn't beat stronger teams and when it occurs there has to be a reason. Sometimes its blown assignments by the players or poor calls by the officials and sometimes its a coaching deficiency on that particular day.

You're right and by all accounts Miles does a standout job in most areas associated with coaching a college football team.
But he does not manage games particularly well and that is what we, as fans, see. I've never called for Miles' head but I've never been his biggest fan either.

Read the post. Saban didn't have this kind of adversity last year. We didn't have to look far for yet another Saban FAIL!

Les miles is the smartest best coach ever. LSU is actually holding miles back, without miles LSU would look like auburn every year

quote:saban lost carey & broussard & won the nc in 03. he lost 9 starters just on defense last year, & is in position to win his 3rd title in 4 years so your logic fails.
Saban would have absolutely $hit the bed under these circumstances.
quote:miles won a title with 2 loses. & you want to talk about saban being lucky?
He's only successful when the stars align

So you're saying Brian Kelly could've won 10 games in the SEC this year? Fricking stupid.

Inhate that arguement, along with stating this isn't the Hallman Tigets, these aren't even Nicks Tigers.... I mean he was taking over a team that lost 9 games the previous season and replenishing the team with recruits. LSU was not a national contender when he took over but they were by time he left.

Miles has a great record. Miles is not a great coach.
That's the logic of many LSU "fans". It does not compute and illustrates their ignorance.
