8 years of evidence shows you that this "habit" poses no problem. How much more empirical evidence do you need from CLM before you just relax and enjoy the ride? You got 8 years of games to pick from and you will be hard pressed to find more than a handful of games that fit your description and support your point.
We can go back to 2007 if you want. Losing to Kentucky and Arkansas, but we got lucky, so we can't say it cost us. The point being, if we keep walking on thin ice, it's gonna eventually catch up with us

No its not...it will continue to be like it always has been under Miles. We will skate by a lot of inferior teams....but when the lights of the big stage are shining the brightest, CLM and LSU will be amongst the best of the best. FACT!

It's not a nightmare, but it does relegate us to Peach Bowls. Thanks for being gentle. I'm not negative on this team. I think 10 wins was good year. And I like Miles. I just like to look for the reasons as to why LSU isn't even better. It's something to write about on a football message board. If everyone wrote the same fawning posts then this would be a boring site.
Well I agree with the bit about "fawning posts" and boredom....but "PEACH BOWLS"? How many of those have we been to in the last 8 years?

We will skate by a lot of inferior teams, but the few times that we don't and the other variables involved don't go our way, it will cost us...........it always catches up to you

You're absolutely right we play to the level of our opponent not to our potential and that's Les Miles strategy play defense run the ball and try to win the game in the fourth quarter Nick Saban's strategy is kick the opponents arse and if you're a better team keep your foot on the throat and press down! We don't put anyone one away! It makes for exciting games and is unimpressive and frustrating. I have honestly never seen a coach get less out of the talent He has !

Ok I'll make a kinder and gentler point to you since you don't seem to want to argue in grade school fashion...your loss.
Miles is an emotional guy and he played and coaches in an emotional way. This lends itself to a team that will not play in a straight line. There will be highs and lows, for better or worse.
Saban strives to take emotion out of the equation, thats his control freak style and personality. Nobody does it better than him and anyone who tries to will ultimately fail to beat him at his own game. His teams will play more at an even keel and dispose of weaker teams in a fashion that will keep his fans happy.
So what does that leave you as a way to beat him? I'll take CLM's style anyday. Skate by the weak teams, but when you play your main rivals, mostly Bama, let er rip and let the chips fall where they may.
It's this contrast of style that has given LSU the only real chance of unseating Bama in CFB. Let me know when you find someone else's approach that gives them a better chance. Until then I'm taking Miles and I like my chances!!

Glad you brought up 2007 but it illustrates my point exactly.
The reason our "bad" losses didn't cost us that year is that EVERYBODY else had bad losses too!!
Its a CFB issue, not a "LSU alone" issue.

Exactly, it happens to a lot of teams, which is why it will eventually happen to us

Ever heard of Mack Brown. He coaches at an obscure little school in Austin. How about Lane Kiffin, or maybe Gene Chizik? Mark Richt anyone? Bob Stoops?
(Yawn) You're just another boring nega tiger born with a birth defect... no sense of perspective...an awful tragedy really.

LOL...well you are a slippery little fricker I'll give you that...couldn't corner you in a phone booth.
It doesn't happen to "a lot of teams"...it happens to ALL TEAMS.
So you want some miracle worker to come along and wave his magic wand and make LSU the ONLY team in america that plays up to expectations EVERY game?
Really?? Do you ever watch anything besides LSU football games and cartoons?

It does make for interesting message board material when ppl have such strong differing opinions on one subject and neither will convince the other of their point but will sure as hell keep trying

Yes, but it doesn't happen to all teams at the same time, so when it happens to us at the wrong time, it will cost us
Just fricking admit that it can catch up with us. You don't have to say that it will, because that would make you think you're going against your boyfriend Miles, but at least say it's a possibility

Yeah... But that's what it's all about... Can't blame someone for having strong feelings either way.

2 and on track for a 3rd. You can substitute "peach bowls" for "non BCS bowls" to make it more accurate.
There's only one program consistently better than ours the past 5 years. Just happens to be in our division so no avoiding them. So if we want to be the best the team simply must be better than Bama. Nothing wrong discussing why our team doesn't play up to that level consistently.

So you don't think that lsu continually playing close games against lesser teams is any cause for concern at all? Cause they will always win them all and it will never cost us at any point?....and like I asked earlier do u feel that every loss during miles tenure were games they should've lost?....another example is the Tennessee game 2 years ago. A bad bad Tennessee team is a brainfart by dooley away from beating us in our own house. Yes we won so it makes your arguement look sound but you really wanna rely on the other teams coach having 13 men on the field to win?

Except for a few exceptions it has been the offense that cost us games the past 8 years. I don't think it's "playing down to competition" bc usually the defense is consistently good. Even today the defense held Ark to 13 which should've been plenty good enough. It's just the offense can't take advantage of opportunities or put games away.

I agree to an extent. But I look at it this way. Look at the gameplan we used against bama. Les knew we couldn't just line up and run it down their throat and win. So we opened up the offense and played our best game of the season imo albeit a loss. Still questionable coaching decisions in that one but a good gameplan as a whole. So why seemingly regress the gameplan when playing lesser teams as if to say we only need to be at our best against the best and against the rest we will just get by. That's what I don't get. So whether its playing down to the competition or coaching down to the competition its really one in of the same.

Yeah. I really don't know what the deal is. I live the wins but scratch my head at how ugly they are. That's why I come here to read opinions but it's hard with all the "negatard" or whatever the stupidass insult du jour is anytime someone questions anything.
Posted on 11/24/12 at 12:26 am to tigerinthebayou
One thing that gets overlooked is that the close games against inferior competition cuts into valuable on field experience for the younger players. We often bemoan or worry about how we're going to replace certain players at the beginning of the year because the players penciled in have virtually no experience. The assholes two states to our east just plug in replacements each year that are already seasoned.
I'm not complaining about the results, just think we make it harder on ourselves at times.
