Jay Farrar is one of the best. Son Volt, Gob Iron. I think Uncle Tupelo was his best band though.

back in the early 90s, they were a touring machine. I must have seen them live 10 times during my time at LSU. I don't recall enjoying them much at all. But I wasn't into alt-country back then.
Good stuff tho.

Amen.
and I can agree with this too -
To be honest I like Son Volt about as much as Uncle Tupelo. Gob Iron is on order.

Uncle tupelo was his best band because of jeff tweedy.

Groundbreaking band, and two monster artists.

Meh. I've tried to get into Wilco; they are better than the average crap out there but still not interesting enough for me to put into my rotation. Sure, Tweedy contributed to Uncle Tupelo. But based on their work after Uncle Tupelo I'd have to say that Farrar was a much larger reason that Uncle Tupelo was so good.

So wilco is a huge band and nobody outside of the alt country world had heard of son volt, but farrar is why uncle tupelo was so good? Thats laughable.

Uncle Tupelo is the definitive alt-country band... No one has done it better...
And yes, Farrar was the driving force behind Tupelo... And Son Volts debut record blew Wilco's away... Since then, Wilco has had the better output IMO...

I agree with that.

Wilco is by far the more popular band
I remember having a conversation with someone on TD trying to argue that son volt was a bigger/more known band than wilco.
Had to laugh at that one.

Well that was probably true through the end of the 90's.
I like the first three Sun Volt albums but didnt' care for his solo stuff that much. I think the biggest problem is Jay Farrar's ego. It's why Farrar is always driving band members away. I've read he's pretty hard to deal with.

sun volt's debut album was much better received than wilco's.
Jay farrar is a complete freak and I think that is one reason they are not more popular. The dude has got serious social interaction problems.

Also, Jay has stayed pretty true to his roots in regards to sound... that hey day has come and gone and is still just a niche...
Tweedy has evolved over time, as has Wilco's sound, to the point that the country side is almost non existent...
Neither path is right or wrong...
