Ole Miss's Demise what caused it.

What happened to the Ole Miss football program. I am old enough to remember some really great Lsu vs Ole Miss games around Halloween. Course i can also remember some really tight Lsu vs Tulane games at the end of each season. But to the point how did Ole Miss get to where they are and have been for so long. Is it school size? loss of Financial backing from the school to the football program? Bad coaching and thus bad recruiting? Curious about what caused the demise.

That high school stadium doesn't help very much

A few things:
1. They have not improved facilities like most other major programs in the country.
2. They can't get some of these MS kids to qualify academically.
3. It's a small state that they have to split with MState. Should be a one state school.
4. Constant racism from the students/alumni.

This is coming from an LSU grad that grew up in MS. Small state with brighter lights on either side, and too much completion instate. And perceived racism aside, the culture is just screwy. Sooo clubby. There is not a public college in America where more pretense can be found, mostly unfounded. It was a turn off for me and I have family that went there. Ole Miss was a "Mommas boy" school to me growing up.

The stigma related to the school Re: racism without question.
True there's racism everywhere, but there's a reason the stigma looms larger there than any other school for obvious reasons and they seemed to be much slower than their SEC brethren in taking the proper steps to erase the stigma.

The one guy who put the program at the national level also tore it down. Johnny Vault. After he retired, he kept on publicly armchair quarterbacking every coach who went in. He turned into a constant source of controversy. Not too many decent coaches want to walk into that. I don't think the racial thing is as big as folks make it out to be anymore.

We weren't great....but we weren't bad either back in the 90s and early 2000s. Then Pete Boone came in as AD in 2002 and just messed shite up all around. Didn't take care of his coaches. He played banker more than he did AD with the money we had.
With this new AD, he has shown he is willing to spend money to compete. Maybe in a couple years Ole Miss will be back to at least competing and going to bowls every year.

They had a decent program when Eli was there. Once he went to the NFL they had a little drop off, which was to be expected. They they got stupid, just like Nebraska did, (fired Frank Solich for going 9-3 the year after they played in the NC) and fired David Cutcliffe. Neither program has been the same since. Of course Ole Piss never was anywhere close to Nebraska, but you get the point.

Economics is a huge issue. The state is so poor and education is so bad that it's hard to raise money or even get the good athletes into college.

Firing David Cutcliff didn't help. If he came to LSU as the Head Coach, I wouldn't be upset. (not a Miles bash, just a hypothetical). Shitty Athletic Department making the decisions over there IMO.

There aren't enough neon lights in Oxford and no South Beach.
