What I want to know is what is the ideal gun to buy for deer hunting...

The 7mm Mag is overkill for deer unless shots are 300+ with some consistency. The 30-06 is a good choice due to readily available ammo. I've never understood the benefit of the .270 as ballistically and recoil wise its really no different than the 30-06. To me its really a matter of personal preference when choosing between the two.

IMHO, the ideal round for most N. American big game is the 7mm-08. Energy is comparable to the .308/.270. Trajectory is nearly identical and the 7mm-08 is regarded as being more accurate. The shorter cartridge uses a shorter action which lessens the overall weight of the gun, reduces recoil and allows for faster follow up shots. I've used the 7mm-08 on whitetail, mulies, black bear and wild hogs without problems and wouldnt hesitate to use it on moose, caribou or elk.

Just please tell me that you realize the advantage of a short action isn't so you can cycle the bolt faster.

Its among many reasons to like a short action. I listed several others. Please tell me you read the text you chose to quote.

so, let's assume I want a .270 or a 30-06, what are the good models to consider?

I know of Winchester, Remington, Weatherby, Browning...I like the classic wood-grain look.

Seems like the choices are endless...how to narrow it down?

Weatherby
Browning
Remington
Winchester

Wood grain if you're not gonna beat the snot out of it.

Synthetic stock will take more abuse.

Those are the classics. But today's best guns out of the are probably Tikka and Savage.

To narrow it down you need to put your hands on all of them and ask yourself which one feels the best. IMO

Out of those I would get the 30-06 in a Winchester model 70 and never look back

I also prefer wood to synthetic.
I can only speak for Remington, besause its all I ever owned, but I don't think anyone makes a bad rifle these days. I would prefer Rem, Win, or Ruger first, but thats just my opinion.

chicken..... go and buy you a Remington 700 in composite or in the pretty wood grain that you like..Get it in 06, 270 or 308 and you will be where you need to be... If you just want to spend more money, buy a Weatherby or a Browning,,, your call...Trust me.

i wouldnt steer you wrong..

If you don't already have a preference just go with price. If you don't shoot a lot, it wont matter much imo.

30-06 in a Winchester model 70
hard to find one these days near Houston...Carter's Country is all out, and this place in College Station is out...probably because deer hunting season starts next week here.

I'd set a budget and then go to a shop and see which one "feels right". Also consider what you are willing to spend on a scope and mounts. Often these can cost as much and in some cases more than the gun itself.

You cant go wrong among any of the brands listed. The Rem 700 is solid as are the pre-64 style Winchesters. The Browning guns are legendary. I'm a Weatherby guy and love their guns. Some folks really like the Vanguard series guns, but I'm still a fan of the original Mark V action. My first rifle was a Remington and I still use it from time to time.

.270 here and I've never had any problems with mine. 30.06 is a great caliber gun too though.. From those ranges I'd say the .270 is plenty enough gun to get the job done! Congrats on your first rifle, and glad to see the cluckster on the OB!

Run to Katy and go to Bass Pro. They have a ton of model 70's. Or they did about a month ago when I was there.

I think Savage has made great strides in recent years. It wasnt that long ago that they were considered the Yugo of firearms. Sure they got you from point A to point B but you didnt want anyone to see you with it.

Of the Tikka/Sako/Beretta guns I prefer the Sako models. I checked out the Tikka T3 and it simply felt cheap to me. I've never fired one though.

7mag is overkill IMO for deer inside 200 yards. Some here will tell you otherwise. I don't think the increase in recoil and ammo cost is worth it. If there's a chance you'll ever go elk hunting then the 7mag is probably worth it, but the .30-06 is more than adequate for elk.

.270 and .30-06 are the kings of the deer woods in Louisiana.

This.

The recs for 308 Win and 7-08 also have merit. A deer shot in the chest is not going to know the difference between any of the 4 calibers. My first big game rifle (bought as a teen) was a 270 Win. When my son started hunting, his first deer kill was w/ the same gun, albeit using a reduced recoil handload. The next year I bought him a Savage bolt action in 308 Win. He's killed a bunch of deer w/ it. Comparing similar bullet wts, the 7-08 and 308 will lag behind the 270 and 30-06 by 50-100 fps; that's not really significant at usual hunting ranges.

The only advantage a 7 Mag MIGHT have would be if one routinely hunts deer at MUCH longer than usual ranges.
