Why was it rated R?

I've seen more violence in a cartoon on TV. Yes they showed a few people getting killed but I honestly don't see how that wasn't PG. PG-13 at the worst.

R movies have more street cred come Oscar time.

Normally the studio breaks its back to get below an R. You just about have to be right because I really can't see any reason it got an R.

I actually said this as we left the movie the other night.

It had some cuss words but really no reason it needed to be R.

Maybe the MPAA Narcs didn't like the excessive cigarette smoking.

It must freak young people out to see ashtrays full of cigs on desks in an office.

It may well have gotten the rating under 'disturbing imagery' provisions; someone hanging from a cherry picker in the streets of Tehran, the firing squad footage, the dude getting shot in the street near the Ambassador's residence, etc.

I've seen worse than that in PG.

I think it was mainly due to portraying the hanging people.

Also I think there is limit on how many times you can say frick in a movie before it is automatically rated R

"Rated R for language and some violent images"

LINK

Has to mostly be the profanity, there was a good bit of it throughout the movie, especially when the CIA guys would yell at each other.

Probably because of the wood chipper scene. William Macy was great in this movie.

Yes, I know.

Wasn't that before the PG-13 rating existed though ?

This might be true. You never know what really irks the morality squad doing the rating.

Listening to the commentary on the True Romance DVD, it almost got an X-rating for the violent scene where Gandolfini and Alabama bloody battle it out in the hotel room...specifically they objected to when she blows him away and raises the shotgun over her head in "primal screams" and acts "too animalistic" and starts beating his dead body with the gun.

They thought it was shocking.

that's a myth.
The King's Speech was rated R and the ONLY reason was because he said frick like 20 times in a row in one scene.

This is my opinion.

I kinda felt the same way about Looper. Saw no reason they should have made it R. I love titties in a film as much as the next guy, but it felt like a PG-13 movie at its core. Can't believe I'm saying this since I want as many films to be R-rated as possible.
