re: USMNT WCQ Squad Selection Discussion (UPDATE: DONOVAN/SHEA OUT FOR BOTH MATCHES)

Not calling in *at least* Beasley is criminal.
We have zero outside midfielders, which greatly hinders flexibility to make mid-match adjustments.
Beasley wouldn't be remotely disturbed by starting in these matches. He's seen it, he's done it. He's still one of the fastest players in the pool, and one of our best set piece takers.
Klinsmann is hell bent on playing "his style", winning games be damned.

I can't imagine he stays if we don't qualify for the World Cup. We have the talent to do qualify so if we fail to, it has to fall on Klinsmann.

Knowing that Shea can't go, why wouldn't Klinsmann bring in someone like Gatt? I know Beasley has experience, but I haven't been impressed with him in a long time.
We need to score goals, and that means we need to have dynamic players in the game. Without Shea and Donovan (and without Jozy), a guy like Gatt would have helped. Now, I hope he plays Corona off the bench.
It's pathetic that our only non-central midfielders are Zusi, Kljestan, and Corona. In my ideal NT set-up, these guys wouldn't even be in my final 9 midfielders to make the team.

Why Klinsmann isn't calling in replacements for Donovan and Shea blows my mind.

I don't have any problem with those three making a final squad, but only Zusi really plays as a wide midfielder in his club team setup.

Especially after I burn down US Soccer headquarters if that happens.
*note: the preceding message is written 100% in jest. Okay 96% in jest. But still.

Since when is Beasley a set piece maestro?

He's not a "shot on goal" type from in front, but great at playing the ball in from set pieces on the side and corners. Serves a great ball....
I'd much rather have Bradley (and Kljestan, who's also a good set piece guy) use their size in the box.

Ok, I'll admit, that Gordon goal was sick.

Yeah that goal was sick. You know what would have been better though?
If he would have put it on frame when Wondo dropped off to him right in front of the fricking goal.

Really? We are rolling with 22?
Posted on 10/10/12 at 12:25 am to UASports23
The good news is that we would have to try pretty hard to frick up in this group.
The key to advancing is a Guatemala-Jamaica draw. That would guarantee us advancing with just a win versus Antigua.

I can't believe we are even in this position?

Zusi and Kljestan would both probably prefer to play in the center as #10's. Zusi is extremely versatile. He's been playing as a left winger in SKC's 4-3-3 last I saw. (A function of the Bunbury injury) I think Kjlestan is a player who wouldn't have much value as a wide player. Where does he usually play for Anderlecht?

Sacha was played out wide against Italy. He didn't look comfortable there.

Zusi played well out wide for us against Jamaica. After sleeping on it I'm not worried about him out there. Should be more than enough pairing up with Dolo (which they did extremely well last game) against A&B and Guat.
However, if Williams gets put in a wide role again I will start punting infants. He belongs at CDM and nowhere else.
Dempsey is much better up top withdrawn from the striker than out wide IMO. Is there any way Sacha can play LM? I must admit I am not familiar with this guy at all.
----------Howard----------
Dolo---Cameron----Boca-----Johnson
--------Williams-----------
Zusi-----Bradley-------Sacha?????
----------------Dempsey-------
------Gomez----------------

I have a really bad feeling we will see either Jones or Williams out wide.
