Schlumberger - Let's talk about it

I'll be going on a trip with a guy who's company got bought out by SLB and he always has a ton of stock market questions for me. I like the E&P side of energy, but I don't know much about services.
The reason I don't want to just google, is because he's going to know all the high level stuff. I'm really looking for some interesting angles, points, and outlooks.

Does SLB drill for C&C Energia CZE in Columbia? Outlook for Columbia is suppose to be really good with demand exceeding supply in the region. CZE is Candian based and has been in Columbia a while and I was just wondering if SLB would say if they drill for them. A lot of companies are moving equipment to Columbia just wondering if SLB is on the move?
MI-SWACO was a great grab by SLB. They do the most of drilling in the gulf.

Here is a SWOT analysis from the WSJ, LINK

MI-SWACO doesn't do any drilling, they provide fluids used in drilling.

Services does all the hard work the operators just point and say drill here.
Schlumberger is such a huge company, they literally do everything, would be hard to pin down some talking points, what does this guy do?

While this wasn't what I was looking for, this will make a great one liner to break out to him.

He worked for Smith International.
He used to be a directional driller, but took several promotions and got into management.
I'm not looking to be able to compete with him about knowing about his job. Just rather be knowledgable about where the industry/company is going.

That is true i was just trying to get a point on what the guy did because like i said they do so much stuff, just know his general area would provide a place to start.

Neither does any other component of SLB for that matter. They provide services used in the drilling process, but actual drilling is done by the rig & rig crew, under operator guidance. It amazes me how hard that concept is for some people to understand.

I don't know where to start so..
Basically the operators contract out the entire process of drilling and sometimes finding a well. Their people consist of planning the well(Pet. eng.) and organizing/managing the entire process.
SBL gets the majority of their revenue from 3 divisions:
Reservoir Characterization- Modeling of the well usually through what they call wireline, which is just a method of running instrumentation downhole via basically a long arse extension cord
Drilling- self explanatory
Reservoir production- Most likely lots of artificial lifts, ESP, and stuff. After a while the formation pressure is to the point where you actually have to pump the stuff out.
They grew a bunch after purchasing smith, especially for such a large company. Revenue jumped almost 50% year over year for 2011. Drilling went up about 75% because of the smith acquisition.
NA is still their hot bed, accounting for roughly a third of the revenue. I'm sure at SBL like most places they consider NA pretty stagnant and the Eastern hemisphere as the growth sector.
A big thing right now with service companies getting so large is selling packages to operators. We don't just want to go in and do your cementing, we want to sell you a whole set of services with well construction for example, cementing liners, drill pipe rental etc.
Hope this helps a little.

Well yea but I meant they don't even sell drill bits or anything.

Go to the SLB website, look under "resources" and start reading "oilfield glossary". Rigzone.com is also a good place to start.

I was confused but I get what your saying. MI is/was huge pickup for them. DF companies are a cash cow.

yea I was a little ambiguous. MI was part of smith at the time right?

Yes. Smith had 40%. However, SLB has bought drilling fluids companies in the past & completely ruined the ie Dowell, IDF, etc. If they can refrain from "SLBing" the top DF company in the gulf it could be great for them.

I'm staying away from services for the time being until rig counts bottom out.

He seems to hate working for them. The process may have already started.
