The 770 is a totally different rifle and nowhere near the 700 in quality. It will likely do what you want it to do (kill deer) but it isn't the rifle the 700 is.

Also, stocks are MUCH easier to find for the 700. Once they outgrow the youth stock, it will take almost no effort to get a full sized stock put on the rifle. Then they can keep the short stock for their kids in the future. That cannot be said about the 770.

There are tons of great options out there, but I cannot be convinced that there is something better out there than a youth 700 in 7mm-08 for a kid 5 years and older.
