The earliest lesson I remember my dad teaching me in the woods was to go around fallen logs and when one had to go over them to step on top of them and then step waaaaay, almost jumping, off. That way, you would get away from a snake resting under the other side of the log.

Playing golf at Olde Oaks a couple years ago and on Cypress hole #2 there is a creek by the green. Went down to pick up a ball on what I thought was a black rock and it was a water moccasin. Spooked it and my and

My dad killed a rattle snake with 19 (maybe more I forget) rattlers on it on at Bodceau one day. My older brother was little at the time and dad was carrying him on his shoulder and when my dad was shooting in my brother was up there screaming "choot it! choot it!" That mount is awesome. whole body is as wide as a softball.

Also he was in Alaka elk hunting walking through the woods and was going to jump over a fallen tree and there was a brown bear laying down on the other side. The bear stood up on them and dad pulled a arrow out the quiver and shot him with his recurve. Bear stumbled, dad said he kind of coughed and went back down on all fours and his buddy popped him in the head with a .22 I think. My dad is kind of a badass

I dont have anything that even pales iin comparison. However when I was a kid we were dove hunting and I accidently fired a shot off while we were sitting for some birds and blew up the ground like 5 ft from his feet. Told him I was shooting an ant. He almost

Playing Ricewood golf course, now closed, in Oberlin one day. On this short par 4 that dog legs to the right, I hit my ball out of bounds into the woods bordering the dog leg. Out of the hole I mosey over and give it a courtesy look to see if I can find my ball. I walk a little, look around, walk a little look around. I stop and look down between my feet and there is a 3-4 foot copperhead laid straight out. I slowly step away, and forget about my ball.

Sweet azz Spiderman shirt!

I guess your cobwebs immobilized it long enough for you to shoot your concrete slab, refracting the bullet perfectly into its fang (and ultimate demise).

Well done.

I stepped right over a 3 ft CM on sat. I had hired a 14 yr old neighbors kid to give me a hand out on the lease. We were walking down a trail shoulder to shoulder when suddenly he stopped and said whoa! I took one more step the turned to look back and realized i had stepped right over/past her open mouth! We were both about 2 ft away from her where we stood. I pointed out how to identify her as a CM and suggested we both back up. As he stepped back she made a half hearted strike at him and slithered away.

Of all of the days to not wear my snake boots and not have my pistol on me. In a mere month ill be walking that same trail in the dark.

I had so many runs in with cotton mouths growning up it is a miracle one didnt bite me. They were usually as scared as I was. When I was about twelve and fishing on Lake Claiborne walking around a bend where I had lost a 10 pound plus bass the day before from a boat I step right dead on a big arse one that clearly had just eaten a fish and had huge bulge in the middle of him. I jumped straight up and it tried to make it back into the water but the grass was so tall I had no idea which end was the head etc, and the more I jumped it moved and then I would step on it again. I stepped on it high steppin three or four times with my fishing rod in my hand. when I finally got off it took me a minute to determine whether it bite me or not. I was really stunned and realized it had not bitten me. Then years latter when I joined the legal professional I realized why. it was professional courtesy.

Years ago I got called out to replace a liner in a pool way out in the country. I parked out front and went around back.

After I cut the liner out and got my measurements, I needed to load the old one in the truck and haul it off. I saw that I could pull through a field and get the truck real close to the pool so I wouldn't have to drag the nasty liner pieces back to the truck.

So I'm in my summer time pool guy gear, flip flops, board shorts, and usually shirtless. I start walking through this field around the house to get the truck. I'm a confident guy, I look up when I walk. I was looking up at the barn and their horses and never saw it. I just sensed the evil of this cottonmouth, I nearly stepped right on it. It struck at me and instinctively I jumped straight back and it struck at me 2 more times while I danced around it. Then it beelined right for the lady's flower beds around her pool.

I got the pool pole and knocked the shite out of her flowers for about 20 minutes, I was spooked for a long time about walking through grass that wasn't neatly mowed.

I've got one............

A couple of years ago, in the early spring, I was out doing some photography near a swamp. I was walking along the edge, and I looked down, and THERE WAS A COTTONMOUTH!

That's the end of the story. Not sure how I survived, but I did.
