So do the older card still hold there value? My dad has every card from 61-64 and i think half of 65 with 4 or 5 copies of many of the cards When i was like 10-12 i orginaized them and books and looked up all their values are they close to that still?
Vintage cards are what most people try to collect now. I mean obviously people are still buying new cards seeing as each company makes 50 different sets now. But what's the point of spending $25 on some packs and get some linebackers signature card when you can spend that $25 and have you a Eddie Murphy, Kirby Puckett and Barry Sanders RC cards (that's what I did a few months ago ).
Pre 70's hold their value really well even common cards have value Pre 60's.

As a kid I got tired of every set having multiple subsets of chase cards which could only be found in one or two packs per box. The regular cards were worth nothing. Plus I was getting to the point where I got bored with them. I picked up comics for a while, at least I could read those and then later I got into Magic cards which had both the thrill of collecting plus it was a game so the cards had some function other than to look at.
I would have taken so much of your money... And you would have been happy. hahaha

The worst part is as low as the Beckett value has gotten you would still be very lucky to even get half of what it's "worth".
I agree. Beckett used to be the bible, but people soon found out that it over inflated the card market. All of my cards that are actually worth a little and worth a fraction of what Beckett says it is worth.

Elleshoe, who is that in your avatar?

The older cards hold value better but still have lost a ton of value. The Jordan cards('86 Fleer and '85 Star) are the best examples. He is still the greatest athlete, from a value standpoint, that the industry has ever seen and yet his 2 most prized cards(imo) have dropped half of their value. They didn't print more of the cards nor did he do anything to cause his value to drop. The bullshite behind the scenes in the industry devalued them.

Be careful... there's a lot of counterfeits of those floating around.

CBS Sunday Morning Story on Trading Card Market
Interesting story that echoes much of the sentiment on this topic.

What's yalls best cards?
Jordan RC
Favre 2nd year card
Montana RC
Rice RC
Kobe Bryant Chrome RC PSA 10
Kobe Bryant Chrome Refractor
89 Score set
It pisses me off that unopened packs of 89 Score were going for $200 and I pick up the whole set for $60. I remember finding 8 89 Score Barry Sanders RC's in a thrift shop bin! Anyways, I remember selling Kobe's Chrome RC PSA 10 for $1800 a pop. Made a killing back then. I had a good hook up on boxes of chrome from a guy at wal mart who would steal them off the truck. All I had to do was weigh the packs and I'd find which ones had the refractors in them. I turned around and sold the packs for a heafty profit because everyone was sold out of them.

Why don't they just go back to the rules they use to have before they oversaturated the market to gain interest again?
Posted on 8/17/12 at 1:22 am to JabarkusRussell
Because that would make sense. Comics need to do that as well. Everybody who said over saturation is correct. The companies need to take a basic economics class and learn about supply and demand.

Well, behavior like this doesn't help, either.

Tell us about how you made out on Hot Wheels and Tickle Me Elmo dolls while you're at it.

Thats still the 80's though. 80's and 90's took the biggest hit no matter who the player is. Pre 80's didn't do bad. You never saw the Mantle rookie drop or Roger Staubach. If you're collecting, Pre 80's should be what you're trying to collect.

1974 was the first year that Topps went to a single series, and started cranking the printing presses.
I'm working on my 70's sets right now, and 74s and 75s, while not abundant, are relatively easy to find.
The last two series (the "high numbers") of 70-71-72-73 are going to be a MANY year project, unless I come into a shite pile of money.

But that's about what it was worth in the mid 90's. I traded off a card that's now worth about $300 when it was valued at about $30. The cards I traded for are now only about $50 total. But it was a fair trade in 1995.

I'm looking to buy a black lotus. If you send me some pictures/scans to my email, jan009@ucsd.edu, I'll take a look at it. What's the history of the card?
Please respond in my email as I don't frequent this forum.

I've still got over 1,000 cards from the 50s and 60s. But the real value is when they hit the 100 year mark. That will be during my grandson's adult life and he's going to get them all when I pass.

I use to love going to Town Crier or the card stores at malls. If I got good grades on tests, I would be able to go each week and get a pack. Soon, I ran out of people to trade cards with.
