Aren't there not many CotF left though??

I think once people (not the Wildlings and Night's Watch, since they know) start to realize that the Others are real, and are back, all hell will break lose. Ultimately, the people of Westeros will have to put their differences aside to fight the others.

No there are very few left. However as long as the the others keep killing wights keep rising and the army grows. The children of the forest have shown that either they or their leader bloodraven just may have the power to control the mindless wights. He already had a spy into the nights watch through warging into Mormonts raven. How else would these mindless shambling snow zombies know that The Lord commander position even existed much less where he slept. Maybe because bloodraven the former LC of the nights watch once slept in that very room and he steered them towards their goal in Game of Thrones.

How would the Others know to mass their power on the fist of the first men without inside intelligence? Mormont had been sending scouts and they were coming back so they didn't run across the others to give their position away. These are seasoned rangers at home beyond the wall they would have seen something.

Also the wildlings never saw an attack as dedicated and massive as the battle on the fist, or at least not to our knowledge they didn't. The wildlings were just harried and picked off.

No the others knew that this was a killing blow against the shield that guards the realms of men. They knew they were men of the nights watch and they knew it was the majority of their fighting force. All because blood raven was peering through the eyes of Mormonts raven the whole time.

Or perhaps they are able to read the minds of the creatures they turn into the undead somehow. Craster's wives also believe the Others turn his male sons into one of them, so it's hard to say what all might be going on with their powers.

That's certainly possible but we know that blood raven has some control over some type of the undead (see Coldhands) and we know he can warg. We also know that Mormonts raven isn't like a normal raven.

It's doesn't seem like much of a stretch

my main argument against this is that when coldhands was trying to get everyone to the cave they were attacked by the other a couple times

if bloodraven wants to get bran to him, why would he try to kill him

also, the cave has a spell to where coldhands and the dead cant enter

if they were in control of them why would they have to keep them away form them?

I agree with all of this. I don't think the CotF can control the Others at all. In fact, I think they are mortal enemies.
The explanation I have for how the Others knew to attack the Fist in force was because they are drawn to warm blood. I think they can sense it from miles away, and blindly go after it like a shark would.

i think this is the case with the wights

but i think the others are intelligent

i base this off of the very first chapter of GoT when they were laughing before killing the ranger

I don't think the children can control The Others either. I think Bloodraven has some semblance of control over the wights. Maybe he can only handle one or two at a time. Maybe Bran wasn't the target of the attack entering the cave maybe his companions were idk.

However the idea that wights are only blindly attracted to warm blood must be false. Why would they have passed up multiple targets to get to Mormont in Game of Thrones? They knew he was The Lord Commander and they knew where he slept. They shouldn't have known that without inside help and I'm pretty sure no one inside the Nights Watch is allied with the others

i think the Others, as intelligent beings, have a mental control over the wights

and I think The Great Other controls the Others or at least gives them instruction

One of the things i'm looking forward to about Winds of Winter is we're gonna see a lot more of the Others and get a clearer understanding of their beginnings and motives

One thing is clear though, dem Nights Watch needs ta gets dem some obsidian

I always thought that the wight knew where to attack Mormont because it was in the Night's Watch and remembered from its former life.

Its probably a combination. I'm sure they have some conscious thought or memories from their previous lives, but follow direct orders without question. They're kind of like the Unsullied for the Others in that they do what they're told regardless if they'll die (again) or not.

This is a good point. I should have expanded my thoughts more. I see it as Ash does that the wights are just "blood lust" driven, but that they are controlled by the Others. The Others were controlling the ones that went after Mormont.

Yeah, I thought that was interesting too. Robb is an idiot for falling for her act.

I think the wights are absolutely mindless and the Others are able to shepherd them. No Others attacked Bran. The wights just attacked Bran because that's what they're trained to do. They have the shield against wights because they don't have full control over their zombie hoard and don't want them coming down where the Children and Bloodraven are.
