This implies that Varys wanted Ned to live. Everyone expected Ned to survive. Joffrey's actions weren't expected. I don't see how Varys had a hand in Ned's death.
I'm not saying Varys wanted Ned killed.
He just wanted to keep the frickups (Joffery, Cersei, Robert) in power instead of having them overthrown by a unifying Northern Leader (a Stark).
Having Ned confess and kneel to Joffery may have prevented the war, in Varys's eyes.

Yeah, I realize he wanted the idiots running the show. The only flaw to that plan is tywin is there and he's no fool.

quote:Interesting point. I support the theory that Varys is actually a Targaryen supporter so that kinda goes against what I think is going to happen, but I see what you are saying.

The only problem with that is that Ned's honor would not permit him to do that and I don't think Varys would put too much faith in that idea.

What is Varys endgame?
We know he is in league with Illyo. We know they were supporting the beggar king. I doubt they expected him to die, as Illiyo even told him to stay while any went to Vaes Dothrak.
Now we have the Blackfyre.
I just don't get what they are doing. Do they really want Targaryens in power? Do they have a larger scheme?
A lot is happening behind the scenes even in the books.

I thought tywin masterminded the red wedding.
The Tyrion chapter around page 300 (SoS) where the council meeting takes place.
It's pretty clear Varys was in on the Red Wedding or at least knew about it, along with Tywin.

He is using his anonymity and position to alter the GoT in the favor of his family.
His endgame, IMO, is to place the Blackfyres on the throne.

He probably got bored in Pentos and looked to Illyio and said, "Hey, you want to steal Westeros? It could be fun."
to which Illyrio replied, "Sure, why not."

I don't think Varys gives a frick about the Blackfyre.

They want a good king that will do their bidding.

And the realm should serve him.

shite is this even a theory anymore? I almost view it as fact.

quote:Viserys and Dany are true Targs. The other child that we meet in DwD, Young Griff (pseudo-Aegon), is not a true Targ. He is part of the offshoot family, the Blackfyres, but he doesn't know this. He believes that he is a true Targ.
then why help Viserys and Dany?
Most people believe that Aegon is dead. Having someone appear claiming to be him would cause speculation. Dany and her brother are known survivors. Their existence offers credence to the survival of the Targaryen line. If they were to support the boy, no one would question his existence.
Once that is handled, Dany and Viserys would then be expendable.
Just my theory.
The fact that Dany now has dragons though offers a whole new usable element to Varys' plan.
As for Illyrio, he is just in it for more money and power, as any rich and powerful individual is. I doubt he really cares much about the Iron Throne. It isn't as if supporting Dany and Viserys is really costing him anything.

Parts in the book allude to Varys knowing about the red wedding ahead of time and possibly masterminding it.
He also urged Ned to kneel to King Joffery to prevent the Starks from overthrowing him.
he also likely convinced Joffrey to behead Ned Stark in lieu of sending him to the wall (to start all out war).

you're two steps ahead of my thinking
however, it's a dangerous plan going after a chick with dragons

Edit: And if she does betray Robb, does this mean the showrunners confirmed with Martin that Jeyne Westerling isn't going to play a significant role in the future?
If she does betray Robb, I feel it confirms the suspicions that in the book, Tywin was behind having Jayne Westerling and Robb hook-up. Wetehr Jayne was in on it is another story.

I doubt Varys expected her to revive the dragons though. The thing is, she is still vulnerable even with her dragons.
