DUDE! That's the exact same thing with me. I told one buddy about Dunk and Egg, and then we watched a few episodes, then 2 days later he was like when Varys says he serves the realm, what if it's the Targaryens? What if he shaves his head to hide silver hair?!?! What is he is a BLACKFYRE?!?!?!?! and he went nuts. I was like wow dude I tell yall too much

I haven't experience that yet but I'm ready for my friend to finish reading the books so we can get REAL in depth. I need to be able to smoke a bowl and talk ASOIAF with someone dammit

Just finished the reread of Cersei's whore walk in ADWD. I noticed one thing that I found strage at the very end. Gregorstein had 2 7 pointed stars clasping his cloak and he had 7 rainbow feathers pluming from his helmet. What is the point of making him religious? Was this just to butter up the faith? They did mention he took a vow of silence, but that was followed up with "until all of her grace's enemies are vanquished". So, it wasn't really a faith of the seven vow. I just thought all of it was odd.

Absolutely IMO. It gives this pious champion to defend the queen. If it was someone with a reputation like the Mountain, it wouldn't look as good for Cersei. And she will never stop having enemies in her eyes, so that vow is pretty convenient.

Who do you blame for the decline of the Night's Watch?
Areys going crazy did not help and Robert was to busy drinking and whoring to care about it. Also he was probably upset that he could not go after the last Targaryen still in the Seven Kingdoms. Mormont must also take some of the blame. He spends a lot time pleading with Tyrion for help and support when Robert and a good chunk of his court was in Winterfell. He only sent one man down to represent the Night's Watch. He should have went himself and most of the top commanders and Donal Noye down to talk to him and the court and try to recruit third sons and other unwanted moths to feed. It got a rep as a place of rapist and thieves, Mormont should have fought that by sending his best men there.

I think the long summer and the years without a significant threat had alto t odo wit hit. That added to the reputation brought by sending the prisoners to the wall made it seem beneath most families to even send a third son.

I think this is the main reason. Mixed with the constant wars and threat of wars.
I mean before Robert's Rebellion there was the constant threat of rebellion by numerous lords (defiance of duskendale for instance). Then Robert rebelled. Then he had some relative peace but he still fought the iron born and now the war of five kings.
Thats an entire generation who have lived in a world where the threat to the kingdom is INSIDE the wall. Thats also a large number of third sons dead or knighted or given lands. The wall just wasn't worth it to them anymore. Their attitude became one of "Let the thieves, bastards and rapers guard the world from grumpkins and snarks. I have a lord and kingdom to fight for"

At Mr. Wayne's suggestion, I'm pasting this here from another thread, it's definitely a theory.
We were talking about Brandon Stark/ Rickard Stark's executions...
(Brandon was an)
quote:
excellent swordsman
According to Lady Dustin, this is true.
And hot-blooded, for sure.
He went flying off to King's Landing all half- cocked and brought much more grief to the Starks. In fact, I think Lyanna sent a raven explaining what was the real deal with Rhaegar, and Brandon either read it as Rhaegar's words in her writing (ala Cersei/Sansa's letter to Rob much later) OR
he was miffed at her rejection of the Lord of Storm's End/ ramifications for soiling the Stark name.
I think Brandon was the only one who saw Lyanna's letter, and made up the kidnapping himself to protect the family name.

Since posting this, I checked and found that Brandon was already en-route to Riverrun for his wedding to Cat when he got wind of Lyanna's..absence. Don't know if he intercepted a messenger on horse headed North to Winterfell or just how he heard about it, but it sorta bolsters the suggestion that he heard it first and could have been the only one to read the actual (sealed) letter. I think he destroyed it, sending his own version of events North as he rode further South to King's Landing.
IMO, Lyanna was too smart to trust such news (breaking betrothal to Robert) to a raven, if intercepted or killed coincidentally, the news in wrong hands could be big trouble for Winterfell.

I like it. Brandon was hot headed enough for this.
Maybe the raven was sent to Riverrun. Then a horse rider came down and gave the news to Brandon. Brandon interpreted it as a kidnapping and rode for King's Landing.
