They took Westeros with 3 dragons, 3 targs, and 1,600 soldiers in the War of Conquest. Once they settled Dragonstone, I'm sure they could have taken it at any time.

I'm seeing it now. Dragonstone was populated by Valyrians a century before the Doom. The Targ's didn't get there until 12 years before the doom because of Aenar's daughter having a vision. They were the only dragonriders to escape Valyria. I guess the Valyrians were satisfied with their portion of the world, just seems like they would have wanted a piece of Westeros as it was certainly valuable.

Yes, Aegon only had 3 dragons, but once he landed on westeros he had no problem winning over lesser lords thats were unhappy to his side. I think that was because 1) Harren was a miserable ruler 2) the Tarqs were already known to the people.

Unless the valyrians of old knew something about westeros that was otherwise forgotten with time..... Their OTHER problem maybe?

That's what I am thinking. Which makes me rethink my whole stance on this series. I pretty much had the opinion that Jon would be reborn, join Dany and whoever is the third dragon, and along with the 3 dragons and people of Westeros defeat the Others. Peace would follow. What the hell was I thinking? This is GRRM and the Others will probably win the war and kill everybody we love and make Ramsay Bolton king of Westeros.

refresh my memory - doesnt the Mystery Knight end with Egg back as a Prince standing next to Bloodraven in Kings Landing? Are they still gonna be on the road to Winterfell and why?

Duncan was offered a position as a household knight of House Targaryen at Summerhall while keeping Egg on as his squire. However he turned down that life in order to teach Egg the life of a hedge knight. He believed that those humble early years would turn him into a greater man than his two brothers.

That happened in The Hedge Knight but I think that line of reasoning would still hold firm with Dunk until the time that Egg proved himself worthy of being Knighted.

Alright, so the general consensus seems to be that we'd like to have a re-read and that we want it to start with Game of Thrones.

Now we need to decide upon the pace. There are 73 chapters in Game of Thrones. If you're reading paperback that's about 835 pages. If we read 2 POVs a week (we'll say starting next week just for shits and giggles) that puts us into May 2013 without any breaks inbetween.

What would be feasible given work/school/life schedules for you all in terms of what you could read in a week? Each POV is around 25-30 pages at the most.

Suggestions?

ETA: This was the schedule that Westeros.org used back in '06 (the timing is pretty close so you can get an idea of how it would look with 3)

Sept. 25- Bran(I) Catelyn(I) Daenerys(I)
Oct. 2- Eddard(I) Jon(I) Catelyn(II)
Oct. 9- Arya(I) Bran(II) Tyrion(I)
Oct. 16- Jon(II) Daenerys(II) Eddard(II)
Oct. 23- Tyrion(II) Catelyn(III) Sansa(I)
Oct. 30- Eddard(III) Bran(III) Catelyn(IV)
Nov. 6- Jon(III) Eddard(IV) Tyrion(III)
Nov. 13- Arya(II) Daenerys(III) Bran(IV)
Nov. 20- Eddard(V) Jon(IV) Eddard(VI)
Nov. 27- Catelyn(V) Sansa(II) Eddard(VII)
Dec. 4- Tyrion(IV) Arya(III) Eddard(VIII)
Dec. 11- Catelyn(VI) Eddard(IX) Daenerys(IV)
Dec. 18- Bran(V) Tyrion(V) Eddard(X)
Dec. 25- Catelyn(VII) Jon(V) Tyrion(VI)
Jan. 1- Eddard(XI) Sansa(III) Eddard(XII)

I think that schedule looks just fine. We can start out with 3 and see how it goes.

BTW: I had some stuff planned for Dec 25 and Jan 1, but I can cancel it.

I had anticipated inserting some breaks in those weeks.

Awesome.

So we want to do a book in one thread (I can start it and as we cover chapters I can link the pages those discussions start on) or each week a new thread?

I like the one thread. or at least post the links the prior threads in the current one. Would make it easier to go back and look at former discussions in case someone missed a week or something.

I'm geeking out over this. I can't wait, so let's get started.

Here is the first sentence of AGOT Prologue:

quote:

“We should start back,” Gared urged as the woods began to grow dark around them.

Obviously, GRRM is foreshadowing the decline of the NW, while giving us a clue that the Others are growing just as the darkness in the woods.

Go...

I'll mess around with the schedule tomorrow and we can go on and start it up.

Any particular dates that stand out as times we might want to take a break (I figure Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Years are givens. Don't know if you want to include finals).
