Fuel gauge issue in boat

I'm having a problem with the fuel gauge in my boat. When the tank is full the needle shows full, @ 3/4 the needle reads 1/2, with 1/2 a tank it reads empty. 60 gallon tank. Is there any way to adjust this thing so that it's somewhere in the ballpark of being correct? I'm not opposed to going to a digital gauge if I need to, I just want to know how much fuel I've got in the boat. As it stands right now, it's a crap shoot after 1/2 a tank...

Im guessing its one of those with the float.
I can only recommend taking it out and shooting some WD on it to loosen the swing arm up. Check your wiring.
But other than that digitals are nice.

Is it a Nautic Star bay boat by any chance?

FWIW buddy, I have NEVER had any luck with the accuracy of fuel gauges in boats.
Just know where/how much is in it like you posted

Is this at all times? I have a digital gauge and it is only accurate when I am sitting still.

no, not a nautic star. I have mercury gauges, no clue what equipment is in the tank. It would not surprise me the least little bit if something was not hooked up correctly or if the wrong parts were installed.

yes, at all times. It's been like this ever since I got the boat rigged. I'm just not getting around to fixing it.

i have a smartgauge in mine, damn thing tells me less than 10% when i have more like 30% left (50 gallon tank)

From what I have been told, the gauge is only as good as the float or measuring device installed in the tank. So I guess the question is, what is the most reliable device to install?

I fill my boat and run it for an hour and then measure the distance and get all the info I need. No need for fuel guage if you fill it up after every use imo.

We always make a stick and keep it on the boat. When the tank is dry just put 5 gal in at a time and mark your stick every 5 gal.

Fuel gauges rarely work right in boats, sayin that my boat is a 91 and it still works

Google Flowscan systems. Best on the market.

The best thing is to top off your boat after each use. That way you don't have to worry about it.

Obviously the best thing to do is just fill it up. But for tournaments I can run 100 miles + 1 way. That's why I kinda need to know how much gas I've got.

This could be a warped float or something simple like a frayed ground wire.
I'd check all of the wires first, then pull the float if the wires check out. Last, I'd get a new gauge and hook it up directly prior to replacing it in your dash.

the fuel gauges in boats never work. get a flow scan system installed. very precise

Doesn't your SmartCraft gauge also tell you how many gallons you've burned ?? Mine does.
I use the "gallons consumed" mode -- mine has always been within 98-99% accuracy when I top off the tank (and compare calculated vs. actual fuel burned).
