Yeah we are fishing guntersville. Did the dog plant and bridge give it away. Ha.

Any other places you'd advise on going? We will be out there at night so probably won't run the dam.

totally agree. cut bait is the best for blues in lakes.

however, i am a flat head fan. i like to catch the fresh shad. i find the flat heads hit those better.

blues will hit damn near anything, flat heads are a more predator fish imo

On Lake Oconee here, I regularly catch monster Flathead here on deep diving cranks while i'm waiting on jugs.

This. Something that smells so bad. Leftover hot dogs left outside, some cut up hot dogs in a blood bait, stuff like that.

The only way to catch catfish is to rig up for something else. They'll bite like hell if you give your kid a bobber with a cricket, or if you set up a minnow under a bobber and pretend you're trying to catch crappie. Make sure to talk in loud tones about how you're going to catch a mess 'o crappie and don't mention anything about catfish. This throws them off your trail and they'll come runnin. The only problem is, you'll be using a light wire hook, so I suggest you bring a buddy with a shotgun loaded with no. 6 shot. If you get any of the bigger catfish up to the surface of the water, have your buddy blast them immediately to prevent them from straightening out your hook. Fish in shallow water where nobody has ever seen a "catfish big enough to swallow a man" or "catfish as big as a volkswagon beetle." The LAST thing you want to do is rig up with heavy line and hooks and go throw a chunk of bait into one of these "known" giant catfish havens below dams or in deep holes. That is, unless you want to spend a lot of time reflecting on your life while feeding the bream and gar.

Yours,

Learned The Hard Way

A buddy and me used to run trotlines down by the dam at night. Every little cove and alley basically...caught a few nice ones (10-15 lb range)...a couple of huge ones (20-25)...anything bigger was a photo graph and didn't keep. I don't like the flavor of the big ones. We used cut up shad...really bloody for the scent.
Had some luck with soap...no luck with the livers...not to mention those are hard to bait/hold to the hook

Buy a jar of "Hogwild" at wal-mart. Buy yellow sponges with treble hooks. Bring a stick to stir up the Hogwild and to dip your sponge in it. You will catch a ton and you don't get your hands stinky.
