Usually a bass fisherman, but a buddy has gotten into catfishing pretty hard. We are headed out this weekend to do some late night fishing. Any suggestions for bait or setup. Outside of catfishing farms as a kid, I haven't fished for catfish in probably 15 years.

Cut the soap into chunks for bait. It's an old redneck trick
But bring the livers for backup

Stationary in the boat with a Rod and reel. There is a dog food plant off the lake we were targeting and also under a bridge. We talked about doing the jugs as well but don't know if he got the stuff to do it.

i still havnt tried on my lines yet. hard to beat fesh shad, hot dogs or chicken livers.

I am going to try it. However, if I show up to my buddies with hot dogs, soap, and a six pack... There may be concern. Ha.
I am actually going to give all of tips above a try just to see what works best.

If the lake you're fishing has shad, then the best bait for big cats would be cut shad.

totally agree. cut bait is the best for blues in lakes.
however, i am a flat head fan. i like to catch the fresh shad. i find the flat heads hit those better.
blues will hit damn near anything, flat heads are a more predator fish imo

yeah you might get some strange looks. I just googled it and there is even a YouTube video

+1
Bream is the best bait Ive found. The bigger the bream, the bigger the OP. No such thing as putting too big of bream on a hook.

Don't know how the soap would work on a rod n reel in a lake.
We've only used it on trot lines in the spring and early summer in the river. Also requires murky water. Once the water starts clearing up we switch to shiners.

Sped.. me, tater, or quib are going to try your soap method on a limb line. it better not let us down.

Put it on a trot line from late April to June in the Amite river and you'll be using it every time.

killed some 6-15 pounders in guntersville last week. we were using live and cut bream with live getting us the best action. Chicken livers also obviously work well but don't stay on the hook well. I'd use cut bait or live if possible.
