Penn State University will be hit with fines in excess of $30 million as part of "significant, unprecedented penalties" expected to be announced Monday by the NCAA, a source familiar with the case told CNN.
I dont get how the NCAA thinks they have the right to fine the school.
and who gets the money?
this is weird.

This is absurd. I would leave the NCAA before I paid them a dime.

It's more than just about helping the victims. It's also to send a message to other universities to not attempt to cover such crimes up ever again. I don't see what you people don't understand about the punishment.

i think everybody needs to wait and see what the penalties are before they disagree with them. imo, the ncaa has lots of lawyers and they aren't going to do anything illegal.

Going to charities and educational purposes. You honestly think the NCAA could just pocket this money and no one says a word? Don't be so naive.

As rich as Penn St is anyway this is a drop in the bucket really.

Does Penn St. really have any room to say a word? They enabled a child molester for 3 decades, the NCAA can do whatever the hell it wants IMO.

Maybe it's the punitive aspect they hope will serve as a strong deterrent to other programs.
When the NCAA imposes bowl bans and such, essentially it's the same as a fine. Pretty much any sanctions really come down to money anyway.

As it should.

That's all the NCAA has control over anyway. Uncle Sam and the incoming lawsuits the victims will no doubt bring will take care of punishing the actual university.

It's pointless to go out of the way for a deterrent to a situation that probably won't ever happen again.

It's not necessarily to deter anymore child abuse crimes at a university but any and all potential illegal activities. It's not that hard to grasp, people.
