I am interested in taking a concealed carry class. But what should I expect? Do I provide my own pistol? If so, does it have to be registered to me, or could it be a family members?

Anyone know where these classes are held around Lafayette? Who should I contact?

Concealed Carry Classes are held at most bass pro shops, Lafayette Shooters (i believe), etc.

I took my course from Gordon Hutchinson. He does a lot around the Baton Rouge Area.

You bring some papers and a firearm with you to the class. They provide targets for you to shoot at. It is a one day about 6-8 hour class. You sit in the classroom for a couple hours. Then you have to pass a shooting test:

The shooting test consists of shooting from three separate distances. The farthest you shoot I believe is 7 yards. You shoot 12 rounds at each distance, and you have to do one reload during those twelve rounds. You simply have to hit all your shots in the silhouette of a human.

After you pass the shooting test (you will) then you go fill out paper work and get your certificate. We had persons who had never shot a handgun before in our class and everyone always passes in Gordon's class.

In the class you learn the applicable concealed carry laws, proper sight alignment, and what not to do.

Handguns do not need to be "registered." The only tracing in LA is when someone buys it from a FFL dealer they have to do a background check. After that you can buy or sell or trade without every filing out any paper work. Therefore, it could be a family member's handgun.
