O.J. is definately up there...

Nixon maybe. Although he was not universally loved.

Shoeless Joe Jackson. Never played pro baseball again. Although Field of Dreams did alot to restore his legacy(deserved or not).

In my lifetime its Paterno. I am too young to truly know who O.J. Simpson was when he was in his prime.

OJ is the obvious answer but I have no sympathy for him.

As for other tragic downfalls involving players I liked/followed:

Donnie Moore
Rae Carruth - He was on my first fantasy FB team
Jose Canseco - always liked him for some reason
