It's difficult to compare the dead to other bands. In the words of Bill Graham, "They arent the best at what they do, they are the only ones that do what they do."
I remember the first time I saw them, they played Help on the Way > Slipknot! > Franklin's Tower. Those first notes of Franklin's Tower started. The whole audience, 30,000 +, locked in and started dancing all together. The whole place was electric and GETTING THE frick DOWN. It was like nothing I'd ever seen at the time. They truly created a magic atmosphere that I've never seen since.

I like American Beauty/Working Man's Dead era... other than that and the odd song here and there, never really cared for them.
I respect them, but for the most part, not my cup of tea..

Number one to me, but im a little biased.
Culturally the only band that may have had a bigger impact was the beatles.
But NO band has left a bigger legacy than the dead.

Pretty damn high. Took the live concert aspect to an entirely new level (spanning many genres, not just the jam band spectrum). Also played a significant role in the psychedelic movement in San Francisco in the late 60's/70's.
Not only is the whole band prolific but Jerry Garcia in particular is pretty iconic for American culture.

Honestly I enjoy their studio stuff more than their live stuff. And I'm a pretty big jam band fan.
I grew up listening to Phish so Dead jams just sound so tame and directionless to me. It's just kind of a group of guys all sort of noodling on their instruments IMO.
I respect them and what they did musically and all that, just don't find them terribly interesting.

This is how I feel as well. I watch their shows/listen to their music and my first reaction is "meh, I'll listen to something else"

I feel like most people who don't really like them feel "meh" about them...but in my experience, a lot of their less commonly known music is extremely unique and enjoyable. You just have to dig a little

I think it's their versatility that makes them a top 5 band in this question. The mixture of folk, bluegrass, jam, blues, rock, reggae, etc has something for everyone. I love the Dead and the bands that were influenced by them someway (Huge Panic fan). Top 5 for sure with Beatles, Stones, Doors, and Allman Brothers all fighting for spots

For American bands a solid #2 behind the Allman Brothers. There are several (3-5) British bands that would have to rank higher.
