I have an updated resume but it probably needs some tweaking. About 4.5 years experience in a white collar construction job in the petro-chem industry.

Any advice would be appreciated.

doing what? i was in the job market a few months ago and it seemed like most of the jobs were either entry level/low pay or you needed 10-15+ years experience. are you willing to travel?

I'm willing to travel or relocate. I was a project engineer for an instrumentation and electrical construction contractor.

Damn! Sorry to hear that PM.

No real advice other than keep your head up, and your confidence high. There is an old saying, "nobody can make you feel inferior without your consent." As is your confidence, so is your capacity.

Yeah. I'm not terribly worried. I've got a pretty good resume as far as work experience goes. I've learned some useful skills along the way that should help me in just about any field.

oh...and a tip. cater your resume for whatever position you are applying for. PM, scheduler, estimator, procurement, whatever. you dont have to lie but emphasize things you did that relate to the job you are applying for.

if you get an interview make sure you study up on that position a lot. when i interviewed for a scheduler position i studied up on every aspect of scheduling. just wanted to make sure i could talk the talk with the interviewer. made me more confident in the interview.

Damn, sorry to hear that, Pman. Is it definite or just still a maybe?
Company downsizing? Lost big contracts?

I suppose you've thought of Shaw and Turner Industries?

Like someone else said, learn all you can about the company you are going to interview with. It's impressive when an applicant knows details about the company.

Have you thought about starting your own business, maybe contracting your services to various companies? I did that and it was the best career move I ever made. It's scary at first getting established but once it starts moving for you, it is the most rewarding feeling ever to be your own boss.

Good luck!

Willing to travel - check
Willing to relocate - check
In a marketable field (I&E) -check
Smarts (a least you appear to have them here on TD) - check
Ambition -

I don't think you'll be unemployed very long.

P, have you considered Australia? That place is booming and needs engineers and construction people like mad. It is expensive down under so get something lined up first but it has tons of prospects. Also those women down there love a good American male.

ExxonMobil BR hires construction and/or maintenance planners from time to time. Hired 6 at the beginning of the year. Check the website periodically if that's something you're interested in. Good pay and great benefits. Good place to work too. Good luck.

ETA: Keep reading that critical path book. One of the questions on the planner/scheduler interview for Exxon is "What does critical path mean to you?"

Start daily NSFW babe threads while you're unemployed.

Move to ND and get a job.
