I'm going with the b-52's. They were fricking UNREAL at the Pensacola fair or whatever it was back in 2003.

Who's the best surprise live band you've ever seen that you didn't expect to actually be good?

Frightened Rabbit. I'm still shocked a folksy-shoegazer band absolutely crushes it live. Keep Yourself Warm performed live is an amazing thing. They just own that damn song.

Oh, and Deer Tick. Holy crap.

Voodoo Fest 2006

Went there to see the Chili Peppers but first thought I'd catch nostalgia act Duran Duran for a few laughs, maybe belt out a couple beer-spittled singalong choruses to "Rio"...also, keep in mind that Andy Taylor had quit the band a couple days before their Voodoo Fest appearance. Session player Dom Brown was announced as his stand-in, but I'd never heard of him and was expecting pretty much a train wreck seeing as how he had a grand total of about a day to practice with them before the show.

Ho Li Zhit!

They were fan-tastic. Not a missed beat, not a sour note, just cranked out hit after hit after hit. Brown had Taylor's chorus-y/flange-y tone dialed in.

I'm still impressed all these years later.

Folksy yes. I find it hard to see anything shoegazing about them.

Not exactly what you're talking about I know but I knew next to nothing about Edward Sharpe before Waka and wasn't even planning on seeing them until a chick with us drug me to it.

One of the best shows I've ever seen. I am now a fan

Phish -1993

of course their shows today are known to be great. but I knew nothing about them in 1993. I had some friends drag me to their show. I was blown away, pure energy from beginning to end.

Beck was another one. I figured he would be decent, but he killed it. I probably didnt know but 2 or 3 songs. I was blown away at his live show.

Probably gonna catch some shite but...

I loved blink 182 in middle school and some of high school. Never got to see them live but they were in Dallas last year so I went for the hell of it.

My chemical romance opened.I'm not a fan of theirs by any stretch, but holy shite they wrecked shop live. They played extremely well and weren't sloppy like most bands these days. I knew two songs of theirs before the show and I'm still the same way, but they are great live.

Honorable mention goes to Biffy Clyro opening for Foo fighters last year.

Saw them in the Warehouse in NOLA in '81 or '82. The only thing I remember about that show is that it was freakin' hot!

A few years back we caught Little Texas at the horse track in NW Houston. They were outstanding . They even rolled out some "Get Back" and encored with "Beast of Burden" . Good Show.
