First i've ever heard of this.

Well, when a ball is tossed softly at about 10 MPH, a grown man with any coordination at all should be able to put the ball to left field or right field at will. He should be able to control hitting it up the middle right back at a guy who is pretty much defenseless since he is 45 feet away. Pretty simple concept that is just a dick move when people do it.

Can't use a Metal Fence like little league?

I've thought for a long time that an inverted L fence is the best solution.

If the ball hits the fence, it is a dead ball - same as a foul.

D/E tourney nowadays only allow so many homeruns and last year if we hit one out in a NIT tourney it was an out the rest of the game so guys that don't want to be out the whole game are almost forced to shorten their swing and go up the box esp. if they like to go opo alot. People that think it's not dangerous haven't played upper competition and played against the douchebags that hit the middle on purpose then trot to first.

I've seen a lot of guys, even at the LSU Rec center, get beamed. It's scary and there's no point. This is recreational softball, not the world series.

That being said, I'm not very good at softball and have accidentally hit the ball at the pitcher before. But unlike all the internet badasses here, I know I'm not strong enough to do much damage.

I've got great insurance, and I also have a glove and the knowledge to back the hell up after I throw. I've watched 1:20 through the video, and only like 4 hit the net. Those guys make no attempt at moving because they are behind a screen. However, they could EASILY get back and get ready.

Another thing I noticed in the video is that every single one of those guys know how to place a ball. They will NEVER intentionally hit to the middle unless the opposing team does it first and doesn't apologize. That's why i'm not scared.

The shot at 2:35 would kill you and you would never get a glove on it. A level Military ball is equal to moderate D ball, not even World level D. We played a military team from Georgia last year at BLD Mansfield and cut them in 3. Go out and watch a true C level tournament and you'll see how hard these guys hit, much less Major, A, B.

We have no rule against it in league. We show respect and stay out of the middle but it gets hit sometimes and nothing gets said. On saturdays you police it yourself someone goes at your pitcher you go at theirs. I have been in some intense middle wars where nobody every said a word and I've been in games where middle gets hit once and people want to fight. I personally hit alot of middle and backside because thats where my power comes from. I never apologize because I focus on driving the ball back up the middle so I won't apologize for doing something I intended to do. I never try to hurt a pitcher but I hit middle and know theres a chance.

Doesn't change the fact that whining over people actually playing the game is chicken shite.

You want to improve safety? Regulate the bats. Don't fundamentally change the way you're supposed to play the game.

the players have little control over what type of bat you can use.

In reality, it is just for fun, but it can get competitive. People will always knock it, but whatever. It's fun & competitive, and thats how i enjoy some of my off time.

In the end, you still have to go to work in the morning, still have to feed a family. "playing the way the game was supposed to be played"?? It's softball, not sure how it is supposed to be played. Like many have said, it is usually just a common courtesy that you don't hit the ball back at the pitcher. Even the best fielding pitchers will get drilled. It's inevitable.

I pitch everything inside so they pull the hell out of it, plus try to get my glove up. Never been hit, but I'm 50 and my reactions are probably a little slower than they used to be.

How does your league deal with cutting the middle (line drive back at the pitcher)?

leagues that give you an out for this are completely dumb

the leagues do. Just as they have control over shitty rules like "you can't hit up the middle".

It's a derivative of baseball. Thus, you play it as you would baseball.

That's a risk you assume when you step on the mound. Adjust accordingly.

You do. Hitting middle in softball = throwing at a batter in baseball.

I'm left handed and 90% of the balls I hit go to the right side. I'm a solid player, but I'm not good at placing balls in certain directions. It usually back fires on me when I do.

Played a tad bit of softball. Seriously hate the shite, but whatever. When I played, some of the pitchers wore a catchers type mask and shin guards, and would back up as soon as he released the pitch.

I would be more worried about 3rd base than pitching though. Most of the dudes had shaved bats and were hitting it pretty hard down the corner.

This is the first I've ever heard of the lane thing though.

Even with the bag = 70 feet and most guys are 10 feet back. Big difference between 80 feet and 45. With a great drop back from the pitcher, you're still at 55 feet. Go to third, stand 15 feet in front of 3rd and let me hit at you.

Again, if the leagues would regulate the bats, this would be much less of an issue.
