Was he thinking of this guy when he came up with it?
Heisenberg
I also see the man died of cancer of the kidneys and gall bladder.

I'm not positive, but I thought that was a name given to him, not one he gave himself.
I thought the DEA brother said they call the guy Heisenberg, saying he was really good with chemistry or what not.
Its been awhile since I've seen the episode where the name Heisenberg was first being used.

Yes. He came up with the name himself and Immediately I thought of the Heisenberg uncertainty principle. I didn't know that the actual scientist died of cancer... Probably not a coincidence in this case.

He came up with the name himself. Someone asked him his name and he said Heisenberg. Also fairly certain it comes from the guy mentioned in the op. He's very popular with chemists and all that.

Yes, that's the whole point.
"Heisenberg Uncertainty Principle" to go along with the unpredictable nature of Heisenberg's character when he acts.

Yep, one of the greatest and yet most subtle pieces of TV writing I've ever seen.

Is it jsut me, or is it not really sublte at all?
I'm no chemistry major, and only took an intro level chem class in college, but I immediately knew the reference the first time I saw the show. And most other people I watched it with did as well, none of them being science/chemistry majors.

Maybe so but it's definitely got a better ring to it than Le Chatelier or Bronsted.

I'd be surprised if 1 in 4 people got the reference. A few weeks ago I was talking Breaking Bad with 3 friends who are fanatics about the show. Two have PhDs, and the other has a Masters. They had no idea about the roots of "Heisenberg". Of course, their degrees are in the humanities, but still...
