The first deadline to really matter is coming up real soon, so who will blink first and get the talks started again, Drew or the Saints?
I say the Saints; Drew has all the leverage and the fallout for the Saints brass if Drew didn't play this year would be monumental.

If " The Loomis" doesn't sign Drew for this season the Saints fans will make Goddell look like meek old lady! " The Loomis" better go into hiding in Antarctica if he f's this deal up. Right now " The Loomis" has a pretty cold outlook on the horizon.

If Loomis publicly offers Drew a generous deal, and Drew doesn't accept it, people's perception of Drew will change in the blink of an eye.

This isn't a standoff or a hold out situation.
It only matters if and only if Drew isn't signed by May 21.
And even then, it really doesn't matter, because that's just OTAs.

By the way, I've long held that the franchise tag was a way for the Saints to have a placeholder in the salary cap in order to allow them to sign other players.
Getting Drew to $69 million of real money over the first three years is rather easy. Getting to the $120 million mark for the total contract (whether it's 6 or 7 years) is easy.
But there is no reason to panic. Plus, I THINK Drew can talk to Payton right now...

To me the deadline is July 15 and that is what the parties have in their head as the deadline date.
Yeah it'll be the story of the OTA if he isn't there but that's just PR

Just talked to a person very close to Brees, was told deal won't be done for a while, not even close. Take it FWIW...
