re: Quick Breakdown of Losses Under Miles

Sorry, but that "part" of me was prohibited from ever existing in Tempe, Arizona, two weeks earlier. I was there and watched one of the most exciting (though not most well-executed) football games I've ever seen, and watched an incredibly gutsy LSU team scratch out a victory against incredible odds (and a fairly decent Arizona State team). That team had all the excuses it needed to just run out of steam, but they refused to quit. That's why I laugh so hard at the absolute morons who complain about the "letdown" against Tennessee two weeks later. Anyone who had been there and seen those guys fighting in the desert would know that they gave every ounce of sweat, fight, determination and exertion humanly possible (and maybe then some) before succumbing to the complete exhaustion of the nightmare in which they'd been living for 3+ weeks.
Now, 7 years later, there's no doubt. It takes an astounding amount of stupidity to believe that anyone short of an excellent coach could achieve the things Miles has achieved here. Either stupidity, or just a pathetic emotional attachment to hating Miles for some pathetic irrational reason. Anyone with a lick of sense can see that his record irrefutably places him among the best coaches in the game at the moment, and he is knocking on the door of earning a place among some of the best of all time. He's obviously not there yet, but he is definitely knocking on the door.
Well said King!!!
I do have to disagree with your previous post about us getting in against USC in 05 though.
I think the storyline about the split 03 championship should have been enough to get us in alone, but the love that the media had been heaping on VY since the Rose Bowl the year before when he torched Michigan, another media darling, was just too strong.
The Reggie/VY Heisman race was all anyone could talk about, and LSU simply didn't have any player that the media could point to as a superstar to matchup against Reggie and Leinart.
Katrina sympathy didn't stop LSU from falling from a BCS bowl to all the way to the Peach Bowl after the SECCG loss.
Though the SEC was already generally considered the best conference "top to bottom" by 2005, it wasn't until Florida murdered OSU in the next NCG that our #1 team was considered a shoe in for the title game.
The media and coaches still favored the USCs, OUs and OSUs of the world, two of which UT beat in 2005, as the best teams although our champ would usually have been acknowledged to have had the toughest road to a championship.
Auburn from 2004 is the perfect illustration of that fact. And there really wasn't much outrage about Auburn being left out at all, even after USC slaughtered OU. Sure, everyone figured that the matchup probably wasn't right, but VERY few writers actually thought that the outcome would have been any different if Auburn had gotten in.
That USC team was already being anointed as the GOAT, and most people just shrugged off Auburn getting left out because they didn't think they would have won anyway.
As much as it would have killed me to see it happen, I don't have any doubt LSU would have gotten left out in favor of UT in 2005.

I think a more intriguing list is the one of 'close' games under Miles...meaning games that literally went down to the final few plays. I compiled one a year or so ago, and it was insane how the 2010 season played out with the Tennessee, Florida, Alabama, Ole Miss, UNC games...
But we have averaged 4 or so games a year that came down to the wire prior to this past season.

I'm comparing Miles' 7 yrs at LSU with Bo Schembechler's first 7 years at Michigan.
Schembechler won 66 games but lost two Roses and an Orange. No National Championships but no 5 loss years like 2008. Miles' record is more impressive to me though.

The 2006 loss to Auburn will always burn me as the Refgate game. That kept us from a rematch that I think we would have won against Florida putting us in the national championship game and raping OSU before we raped OSU in 2007.

the hose we got at the 09alabama (pp non-interception) by the alabama/sec officials in the replay booth HAS TO BE INCLUDED IN THE GAMES MILES COULD NEVER HAVE WON.
SLIVE will always be DIRTY b/c of this game.

Miles hate? I am pro-Miles all the way...
...I just said it was intriguing. As a matter of fact, I like it...not necessarily when we play down to a team like Tennessee in 2010, but I feel like we will have a chance in EVERY game.

I think what's fair is sayin both coaches are winners and stop pilin on one coach because he is with Bama now while building the other one up to his level to soothe your own ego. I have great respect for both coaches, Nick Saban has won 3 NC's in less than 10 years, and incredible feat!

also had the worst playcalling on offense of any game in the Miles era. And that is saying something.

quote:That's mostly because we were out of the undefeated conversation two games into the season. The sympathy was constant and effusive, but we just weren't in that particular conversation long enough for it to be a factor.
I don't remember any of that coming from anywhere, really.
quote:That is true. But it does not change the fact that in 2005, the only stories bigger than the SC snubbing/split title of '03 were the Trojans march to a repeat and the tragedy of Katrina. And all three of those stories would have been served up front and center by an LSU/SC showdown.
No. UT is a Tier 1 Media Darling

quote:I don't know what it was like in Louisiana, but in DC, every single football Saturday had several discussions of Katrina. And invariably, at least one of them brought up what LSU was doing in the wake of the tragedy. Plus, you also have to remember that the Reggie/Vince hype was highly fed by the fact that they were both undefeated. LSU was out of that conversation after two games. Had we still been undefeated and a real contender, the conversations would most likely have been quite different.
The Reggie/VY Heisman race was all anyone could talk about
quote:But when selection day occurred, they had beaten only one.
The media and coaches still favored the USCs, OUs and OSUs of the world, two of which UT beat in 2005
quote:True, but we were blown out by Georgia. An embarassing loss in the last game of the season is almost guaranteed to drop any 2-loss non-conference champ team out of a BCS bowl.
Katrina sympathy didn't stop LSU from falling from a BCS bowl to all the way to the Peach Bowl after the SECCG loss.
quote:And you honestly, truly believe that the general perception was, "go ahead and leave out every undefeated SEC Champion; we KNOW they're not worthy"? I cannot think of a single thing in the universe that would suggest to me that the fact that the only BCS conference to have EVER had an undefeated champion left out of Championship Game had been the SEC -- which was also the only conference to have produced two BCS Champions -- would have operated in any way but in LSU's favor. The undefeated SEC Champion had been screwed over in favor of an undfeated Big XII Champion who was humiliated in the most lopsided Championship Game in BCS history; and you think that would have made people more interested in repeating that move?
Auburn from 2004 is the perfect illustration of that fact.
quote:Well, apparently the media was far, FAR different in Louisiana than it was in the rest of the country. Up here, every Saturday was full of LSU-post-Katrina updates. Hell, the basketball team's run to the Final Four was practically a non-stop LSU-post-Katrina infomercial on every sports channel available up here. And that was 7 months after the fact. Texas got a lot of ink, but they weren't on the cover of Time magazine like Katrina was (at least twice) during the football season. And if anyone thinks ESPN (and every other sports media business) wouldn't do everything in their power to pull in literally the biggest story in the world to their sports championship, then they just haven't been paying attention to the media. And on top of all that, you had the '03 split/controversy AND the Auburn snubbing. If there was a way to resolve such a wager, I'd bet every penny I could scrounge or borrow that we'd have made that championship game if we'd gone undefeated.
I don't have any doubt LSU would have gotten left out in favor of UT in 2005

No emotional attachment here. I been to many games over the last several years. Including the SECCG in '05, Florida in '07, Aub in '07,Tenn in '10, etc.. I have seen first hand the great wins and the boneheaded losses.
What bugs me is although he wins the majority of his games, he also is a lock for some really stupid losses. When that is no longer an issue, I'll start drinking the CLM KoolAid.

I don't think Les has gotten over the 2005 loss to UT in many fans eyes. I know it gave me a glimpse of his clock management skills which have been confirmed by many other games.
I think we win one more in 06 and we play tOSU for the championship.
No doubt.
