Johnny Jones was on the 1980-81 Final Four team that included Howard "Hi-C" Carter, Leonard "Swat" Mitchell, Greg "Cookie Man" Cook,
Ethan "E.T." Martin, Durand "Rudy" Macklin, Tyrone Black, Willie "Super Sub" Sims, John Tudor, and others.
Just about all of them had a nickname, and Johnny's was "Bullet" because of his fast dribbling, speed on fast breaks, etc.

I love having the Bullet as the head coach of the Baton Rouge Basketball team.
So fitting.

Pete Maravich was "The Pistol" so they called Johnny "The Bullet".

Guy was just super fast when taking the ball from one end of the court to the other. If he ever had a step on someone you knew he was gone.
Prolly would have made a great WR in football.

Agreed! We had to wait in lines to get into the PMAC. It was a great time for tiger BB.

What? Did you stop tagg'n your sister-cousin just long enough to leave the trailer park, hitch a lift down to the public library, wait to use their free computer, get on line and ask another stupid question?
Whenever you get home from the Klan Rally & Meth Cook-Off tonight, How about do the rest of us two big favors Mikey:
1) Since we know you ain't gonna stop nail'n immediate family members, wear a rubber - otherwise, whatever kid that comes out is likely to have two-heads and a tail; and
2) Go find another site to post stupid shite on!

Al McGuire really got that nickname going, at least in Jones' freshman year. 1980-1981, Dale's first Final Four team and Jones' freshman year (yours truly's,too ) NBC still did the NCAA tournament and the only nationally televised college games. CBS didn't get the tournament until the next year and ESPN was only in its second year and didn't show live games yet.
Point being, McGuire had just retired from Marquette after winning the '77 title and was very colorful and popular doing his analyst role with Billy Packer and play by play guy Dick Enberg. NBC showed only two LSU games before the NCAA tournament, Texas A&M at the PMAC and Kentucky in Lexington. Still with LSU having such a fantastic season, during timeouts, blowouts of other games they would talk about the top teams that year of which LSU was one of them and various players.
"The Bullet" was of course a play off Maravich's "Pistol" and Jones did have lightning quickness. LSU's depth on that '81 team was just unreal and Jones was any where from the 7th to 9th man on that team. When Jones would spell Ethan Martin late in a game, his opponent's tongue was usually dragging and Jones would run circles around him.
During an NBC game McGuire while they were talking about LSU would mention "that freshman down there, The Bullet." And Enberg would say,"yes, young Johnny Jones".
Now,its possible that someone else first came up with the name, but it was Al McGuire who made it popular at the time.
