Doesn't seem to get any love around here. What kind of style does the French league employ? I'm thinking about picking a team in Ligue 1 to follow, possibly Lyon. Anyone have any input?

The problem with France is that it's French.

I've heard the French have bad attitude but I can't imagine this being true.

FIFY.
I used to follow Ligue 1 very closely, until it became Lyon 1. Looks like its back to being entertaining and competitive at the top with the 'return' of Marseille and PSG. Heck Montpelier might win this year.

I've always followed Ligue 1 because I've been a PSG fan since the mid 90's. It used to get better coverage on Fox Soccer when it was still Fox Sports World, but that coverage has been rather mimimal in the last decade, which has hurt.

Another big problem with Ligue 1 is that it isn't as strong as it was in previous decades. Traditional heavyweights like Marseille and St. Etienne haven't been consistently dominant in years. Other strong clubs like Lens and Monaco are now relegation fodder. Lyon was more a recent juggernaut after years of winning nothing.

Also, Ligue 1 is consistently the lowest scoring of the top leagues in Europe. I'm too lazy to look for it now, but I remember the German columnist Uli Hesse presenting the avg goals per game in the top leagues and France was woefully behind everyone else, which again makes it a tough sell.

St. Etienne

I had completely forgotten about them. They used to be incredible. That Pool/Etienne European quarter final match in '77 was one for the ages. Probably top 5 greatest matches to ever grace the pitch at Anfield.

i love watching Ligue 1 matches. There isnt always a lot of scoring, but the matches seem to have a lot more up and down the field action.

Also, its pretty much back to being a league with some parity, so thats always good.

Arsene Wenger fricked up Lyon. We had Claude Puel for what seemed like ages. We finally got rid of him, but promoted Remi Garde. Garde has done nothing but emphasize the problems of Puel. We need to throw Jimmy Briand into the ocean and get someone actually competent. Jimmy Briand is seriously my most hated player of the last ten years. He's incompetent. Absolutely incompetent. His goals are by pure, dumb luck.

PSG has recently made the moves to put them into the international spotlight as a true contender in the near future. Should be interesting to see how Ligue 1 progresses over the next 10 years

LOL Marseille has played like shite this year. I would know... I live here. No way they are playing in Europe next year.

Actually they will because they won the League Cup.

Yeah Marseille have been shitty this year, but to be fair, Deschamps has been winning silverware and qualifying for Europe since he arrived, so he has kind of returned them back to respectability. This is probably the most success they've had since the corruption scandal relegated them in the mid '90s.

I thought they won what was essentially the Carling Cup of France. Are you sure this qualifies them for Europe? They got knocked out of the other tournament by a non league side

Btw, most people here care about success in the league, which has not been the case this year, unfortunately.

I like watching Marseille (Remy, Ayew & Valbuena)... Have watched more this year than ever since I got that Fox Soccer Go

Eden Hazard, Olivier Giroud & Javier Pastore are also players of interest to me...

Yeah it is, but like the Carling Cup, it qualifies the winner into the Europa League.

No you're right, but they were runners-up last year and champions the year before. I was just commenting that as one the most successful and supported clubs in France, they've had good recent success and it's been good for the league.
