His drum fill, while singing, on the Last Waltz version of Up on Cripple Creek is epic. This saddens me a lot, especially since I was looking forward to seeing him at Jazz Fest.

I've read one of his books and gained a lot of respect for him because of his candor and honesty. I can't stand Robbie Robertson solely because of how much Levon hated him.

And Robbie R. is at the far right -- correct?

Can you ID the two left of LH?

He's my great grandmother's third cousin or something like that. His people are from Marvell/Turkey Scratch, my people are from Elaine and West Helena. We don't really know that part of the family other than it's freaking Levon Helm, but it's pretty cool that she knew him growing up. She died of cancer also, as did her son/my grandfather. Nonetheless, truly an icon and influence to so many artists.

Glad I got to see him once.

Nope, the far right is obviously Nosferatu.

That's Danko to the left of Levon, and the other dude is their Pete Best or Stu Sutcliffe. Probably had to suck pretty bad to miss the cut and see Robbie become famous.

"This saddens me a lot, especially since I was looking forward to seeing him at Jazz Fest."

I was looking forward to his Fest set, as well. Really sad but glad that he was able to live so much and evidently so well post-diagnosis.

Robert Earl Keen has a pretty cool song about Levon Helm. Can't recall the exact title but it is off Rose Hotel. Here is part of it:

"Levon digs the doghouse, playing in The Band,
when he locks in to that backbeat it ain't hard to understand.
Get your body movin', celebrate your soul,
Levon digs the doghouse, that's sho-nuff rock and roll."

Stu Sutcliffe died before the Beatles became famous

One of the very best musicians in rock and roll. And definitely one of the coolest. Motherfricker. What a drag.

So many rock drummers were influenced by him. And what a fricking great rock/blues/hillbilly voice.

I got to see The Band at Jazz Fest a few years ago with everyone in the lineup except Robbie ("The Turd") Robertson. It was almost surreal. Danko was so high he had trouble standing up but he sounded and played great. Levon was motherfricking magnificent.

When Helm plays the mandolin I go into a trance- he's the sole reason I learned to play. I think I'm going to have to name my mando Levon
