where are these kinds of comments coming from?
Football is king at LSU, period. Baseball sells out every home game. Other than Kentucky, no school puts a priority on roundball. This isnt 1990 at LSU anymore.

Johnny is a solid hire and a good coach with LSU ties. He will recruit well and in time bring the Tigers back to the top. Welcome home Johnny!
+ 1
He was a big part behind the success of Dale, with the Xs and Os.
He loves LSU and is a good recruiter.
He now comes back w 10 years + of experience.
I like the hire....much better than Brady and Trent.

you must be young..., I remember when both would "sell out". There is no need to have one in the starvation mode.

An iffy hire imo. Hope it works out but when Brown and Jones were successful it was a long time ago. If this hire is based on recruiting ability, none of these players even recall the golden days that would excite them to sign. For sure get Randy Liv. To help.

Given the current state of basketball did anyone really believe that we would be able to attract a top tier coach?
Who wants to come to a school where BB is playing third fiddle behind FB and Baseball?
After Alleva turned his back on Jones and the Alumni last go round did anyone think he was going to able to do it again? He brought in Johnson and we all know how that turned out.
What LSU needs is someone who can sell LSU to the top in state talent and keep them home. I can't think of anyone who would do a better job of that than Jones who absolutely loves LSU.
I'm not a fan of Collis Temple and the good ole boy network. But the last really talented team we had was Big Baby and that group of local AAU guys that came here together and Temple was involved in getting them here.

I agreed on everything but this.
Coaches coach for the future not the past, as a matter of fact, bad previous performances relieve pressure from the coach as the level of performance either is lowered, or some time is allowed for a "turnaround"

I would agree with that statement. But, the question is why would a successful top tier coach leave a sure thing for a school like LSU unless ther was a god awful amount of money involved (which there wasn't) Unless you found a guy that was looking for a challenge and threw a boatload of money at him I don't think you had a chance of getting one of the better coaches aorund to come here.
So that leaves you with trying to find the next up and comer(never a sure bet). Or just getting something along the lines of what you had.
That is why I don't have a lot of heartburn with the hire. If anything, Jones' strong desire to be should be a plus.He has had some sucess in his current job and he has stiong contacts in the state. Which, given the late hire should be a big help.
I don't know if Jones will get LSU back to the glory days. But, I believe he has agood chance of building a solid program if he can keep the best talent here.

Best hire considering the state of our program.
TJ left the program at its lowest level
Lets get behind Johnny and support the team

Guys, it cant get any worse than what we had. I thought we should have re-hired Dale Brown. Hell, our last girls BBall coach was 120 years old and he did ok. But, JJ is as close to Dale as we could get. Its time to dominate all 3 major sports again, to hell with all you defeatist!

Why do people keep saying things like this?
LSU basketball is not considered "third fiddle." They have been a losing program and, worse, a program with poor prognosis whose product has been not been entertaining to watch.
During Brady's first couple of years, you could tell he had things headed in the right direction. Players played hard.
Once LSU fields a decent product on the court and future begins to look more positive, fans will show up again. LSU basketball may never be LSU football, but to say fans will never care about it again is ridiculous.

Everything I read about jones that is positive references the past. He will have to build the program in the present and frankly nothing about Johnny jones 2012 edition gets me excited.

Does the football team and the baseball team or the track team or gymnastics really have anything to do with baseball? They don't share scholarships? Why can't a team that has a great football team also have a great basketball team. Are basketball recruits anti-football for some reason? I find those arguments stupid.
Having a great football team and a great baseball team at the same time should dispell that line of thinking right. We have had great gymnastics teams, track teams, swimming/diving teams, tennis teams golf teams so to argue that is a reason we will suck at basketball is stupid.
JJ's former player that Dale Brown hired because Dale Brown wanted to help black kids. JJ didn't know squat about coaching and learned what he knew at the time from Dale Brown. JJ started of wet behind the ears. I just hope he learned something valuable when he was at Memphis and refined it since.
It is safe to say that if JJ's coaching hasn't majorly progressed since he was at LSU then Basketball dead. Hope he has learned. No reason to think that he couldn't.

If he is such a great coach and recruiter, why was he at ntexas so long......seems the major schools would have loved a big time recruiter......
For all the haters who think Johnny Jones was a mediocre coach at UNT, why don't you got to the UNT forums and see what they think of him.

They know what a solid coach they had in Johnny Jones, and they're sad to see him go.

Wow. Talk about one man's trash.
That whole board looks to be on suicide watch right now over looking Jones.

Well, its time to welcome Jones with Open arms. I mean mediocre guys like Amacker were declining Freaking interviews. This guy really wants to be here and it looks like everyone who really knows the guy thinks he is a slam dunk. The more and more I have looked at it the more I am o.k. with the hire. If he can make the NCAA consistently, recruit, and fill the PMAC I will be ecstatic over the hire. So might as well give him a shot.
