I don't know the same thing Reds fans have been going through for the last 20 years.

They are going for it and you can't really ask for much more.

The reds have always been capable of spending money. See Ken Griffey and Milton...the difference is they aren't spending it poorly for a change.

Damn that's a lot of money for a 30 year old. But, you gotta pay to play.

They will get a nice injection of cash from the new TV deal in a a few years.

Re: Padres 20 year TV deal $1.2 Billion
This bodes well for both the Reds and Cardinals in coming years. Both should have a massive TV deal well beyond the Padres with the extended reach of both franchises and strong ratings. The Padres reach is very limited beyond San Diego County. It doesn't appear that FS San Diego is even broadcast into the massive Orange county or Riverside markets due to territorial rights of the LA teams, but it does go into Las Vegas (where one would have to assume the Padres are about 6th fiddle on the interest level behind the two LA teams, Giants and even the Cubs and Yankees. "Los Angeles Dodgers and Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim games will not air on Fox Sports San Diego, because of the Padres' exclusive territorial rights"

The Reds need to start their own network pronto in 2016. If the Dodgers + the Angels can gete a combined $300M a year split across a 20M Southern California population base that rarely actually turns on local baseball, why can't the Reds get $100M+ a year on their own network reaching ~15M more passionate baseball fans in Southern and Central Ohio (6-7M), Kentucky (4M), Indianapolis, Ft Wayne and Southern Indiana (4M) and Charleston and Huntington WV (1M).

The only markets of possible competition in that large area where the Reds aren't the clear #1 baseball team of choice are maybe Indianapolis (evenly split with the Cubs, but the Reds draw well on TV in Indy) and Columbus (leans to the Reds, at the worst a 50/50 Reds and Indians town) judging by strong Reds local TV numbers.

Stretching further into Nashville and Knoxville TN (once Reds leaning towns) and into NW Ohio (Tigers and maybe Indians country, but the Reds are the NL team of choice) isn't really much of a reach either.

I say 80-100M a year in regional TV revenue should be the Reds benchmark and goal based on the recent deals in the last 12-18 months? Why not?

Since this is the DRT, the reds lineup for tonight (per reds.com)

W Harris, LF
Z Cozart, SS
J Votto, 1B
S Rolen, 3B
J Bruce, RF
C Heisey, LF
D Stubbs, CF
D Mesoraco, C
M Leake, P

Why do we have 4 OF? Is Harris playing 2B for Phillips? Something tells me this is incorrect

Not sure why they can't get better attendance numbers.

Its a poor town.

They drew over 108K for the 3 game Marlin series, 2 of the three games were sell outs, the other game was Easter. Was kinda surprised they drew less than 20K last night.

Don't get this deal at all. Before last year, the guy was always a slightly better than league average hitter because he doesn't walk at all and wasn't particularly good at hitting for average either. Phillips also only had one season with a WAR above 3.0. He's a pretty replaceable player. The Reds could get a much cheaper player to put up comparable production to Phillips. The Reds should have saved the money to upgrade their pitching or upgrade their 3B. Oh and Ian Kinsler's a much better player so just because he got a 5 year, $75 million deal doesn't mean Phillips deserved a similar contract to him.

Agreed, he's not worth as much as they paid him. He should be getting Jhonny Peralta money.

His lowest WAR in the last 5 years was 3.3, so i have no idea what you are talking about.

5 year WAR

Phillips - 22.1
Kinsler- 23.4

and phillips is a much better fielder.

ETA: Ok you obviously used BR WAR and I used Fangraphs WAR. When Ian Kinsler is healthy he is the better 2nd basemen. Phillips is the best fielding 2nd basemen in the NL and possibly MLB, he also has a hell of a bat. IMO its worth 12 million dollars.

According to fangraphs since 2007 he's had the 4th highest WAR total among 2nd basemen in MLB.

More importantly, why the frick are Willie Harris, Wilson Valdez, and Miguel Cairo all on this team. At least Cairo has given us some good memories- frick the other two.

Anyway, not crazy about the BP deal, think it is a bit long and too much money for a guy who will begin declining now. But as a Reds fan, I'm happy to get to keep following him and the rest of the team for the next several years. Shocked that both BP and Votto got signed.

I dont think there is a chance the Reds get anywhere near 100 million a year for their TV deal but they will get a big bump.

I think this is a pretty good post, even as a Reds and BP fan. BP is the superior defender but is he worth 80% of Ian Kinsler? Probably not, but maybe. I would have let BP walk personally.

I would agree with Barry in that he is worth 12 million for the next few years but no way I'd have given him a 6 year deal.

On Reds Live Brandon Phillips ranks in the following categories for NL 2nd Basemen since 08:
Hits-1st
Doubles-1st
HR-3rd
Rbi-2nd
Fielding PCT-1st

So that is why he get's paid. Oh that and the FANS LOVE HIM, and he is a good locker room guy. And he hates Yadier Molina!!!

If you compare it to what SD got and knowing that the Reds fanship reaches a lot farther than SD, then $100 million is a pretty reachable number.

Or at least close to it.

The post earlier on this page explains it pretty well.
