Yeah same for my brother. He's 9 years older than me so he grew up with Gabriel and I grew up with Phil leading Genesis. I like the Phil stuff too.....up to Invisible Touch which is ridiculous. I act like that album doesn't exist.

Phish is probably the MOST diverse jam band in terms of the types of music on which they base their jams: jazz, funk, prog, even country rock....it's friggin' Trey!
No doubt. That's what makes them the best. But they do have a big Prog base, and have said numerous times that Genesis and King Crimson are huge influences. Hell, they inducted Genesis in the R+RHOF last year.

And it's arguably the best Phil Collins Genesis album.
I think its the best Genesis album

i've heard the term but don't really know what it really means.
Sorry, I didn't mean it like that. Some people get really crazy when you start labeling bands.
I think of early Rush, Genesis and Yes basically. Longer songs, some concept maybe, changing time signatures. For Rush it meant some sci-fiey themes.
Basically every band that my wife hates. I have this thing for Rush and Rush drives her crazy.

Serious, if you really like Prog Rock, grab a copy of Ian Anderson's Thick As A Brick 2 release. Official release was yesterday. I got half way through my first listen last night. Pretty good. Amazing how well Ian's voice has held up.

Looking at the first few examples, Yes was the first name that came to mind. In and Around the Lake seemed like it would fit.

I get why people put Tool in this category, but for me, they don't sound anything like these other bands. They are my favorite band and I still have no idea how to describe them accurately

I'm going to try some Phish. I clicked one of Trey's links in another thread and watched a song from a show. Not bad.....
I like the way Opeth sounds on their latest album, no grunting supposedly and all prog.
I never bought Porcupine Tree's Steven Wilson's latest solo album, Grace for Drowning. His stuff can be a little much. What I have heard of it didn't impress me very much or cause me to buy it.

Thought Tool was "Industrial" but again, i don't get all of these sort of sub genres....it's either rock or it's not.

Yeah I have all of Tool's albums and I leave them out even though they are progressive too. Same for a Radiohead. Radiohead is progressive to me but from day to day, I don't know whether I like Radiohead or not.
To me Radiohead brings out love and hate from people and deserves their own thread. :)

What label do you put on bands like My Morning Jacket or Flaming Lips?

I like Queensryche a lot too. I still listen to Mindcrime and Empire. Empire is a very, very good rock record.
I have to try more Dream Theater I think.

Battles is a really good newer prog band. Been listening to them again a lot lately.
