We are 6-3 in the SEC right now which is where I thought and hoped we would be after 3 weekends. Didn't get there exactly the way I thought we would but that doesn't matter.

Using their statistics in order to validate LSU's offensive production is patently useless in terms of furthering whatever point it is that you're driving at.
Actually, they are not. Taking for granted that Arkansas is a very good team (a supposition upon which the logic is based), the production of their bats against quality pitching can be taken as a reasonable level of performance by a very good team. Thus, pointing out that we doubled that production against quality pitching is pointing out an example of our offense exceeding the reasonable level of performance expected of a very good team. Which of course bolsters the argument that our offense did, in fact, perform well over the weekend. 15 runs in 3 games against a top 5 (now top 15) opponent is not bad, imo.

I was never completely off the Mainieri train, but coming into this season, the big fear is that he assembled this great pitching staff, and then was going to waste it by not assembling a decent offense. Then the problem becomes what happens when the abnormally talented pitchers begin to leave.

Like I've always said, this year's team still has a chance at a super regional or CWS appearance, but right now LSU is still 12th in the SEC in runs scored over 9 conference games. That's got to improve.

Looking at the bigger picture, Mainieri has got to stop bungling his hitting recruits for the power positions at 1B/3B/DH/etc., like I've been saying for years now.

It looks like Rhymes & Katz are definitely better than I thought they were, and that's great, but what about the hitting performances of Fields/Yocom/Moore/Powell/Foster this year? In a year where hitting recruits was THE obvious #1 priority for the program, Mainieri looks like he misjudged hitting talent (and/or who he could realistically sign) for yet another season. I hope I'm wrong, and that these guys flip the switch and turn out to be hits as recruits, but right now, there is still a lot of room for concern over what happens to the program once Gausman & Eades leave.

No. Why would 2 last at bat wins make me jump back aboard?

(sigh)

You can always tell the football fans who are killing time between seasons by lowering themselves to watch baseball.

I've never been off the train. I like Manieri's style. He continues to bring in great pitchers almost every year. I believe he has some areas for improvement but so do all coaches. Hopefully the team turns it on and shuts up all the haters.

Answer: Recruit new abnormally talented pitchers.

Is eades draft eligible this season like gausman? If he comes back and Nola improves, won't be as bad as a drop off.

The way the whole staff is doing, that doesn't seem unrealistic anymore.

I think the last couple of weeks have erased a lot of question marks and shown that Mainieri definitely deserves to be here for another couple of years.

The new question then becomes: Is he going to do something about the hitting so that LSU can compete for a NC over the next 2-3 years? Because if he can turn the offense around, there's no reason why he can't win another NC very soon.

or is he still ruining our baseball tradition here at LSU?

5 years, SEC title, 2 West titles, 3 SEC tourney titles, 2 CWS trips, and 1 NC...he seems worthy of a longer train ride.

Our pitching has been great, he(Manieri) has finnaly started waming pitchers before we lose the lead like he was doing. He is not letting games get out of hand. Hitting still needs to improve but i enjoyed the 17 hit attack Fri.

I'll honestly admit to not making up my mind. I don't think the guy sucks, but not sure if he is our best option either.

A lot of LSU fans/alumni feel that way.

One series will not make or break Mainieri or this program. It's the overall body of work over the long haul that counts. I'm uncomfortable with his stubbornness to put together the best possible coaching staff. There are still weak links there and it was not addressed in the off season, as was the other weak link.

One thing's for sure, he aint no Skip, but who IS?

'07 - first season can't frick anything up
'08 - very great team and very fun season for Tiger fans. no hole this team can't climb out of. SECT win
'09 - see '08 plus SEC and CWS victorys
'10 - season was a let down, but not a meltdown like some advocate. not enough pitching, but still had decent hitters
'11 - problem. great freshmen pitchers brought in, all but one power hitter leaves. starting pitchers do their jobs well, but can't get run support, and bull pen blows a number of games. bad news when LSU has no post season at all. new hitting and pitching coaches needed, only one was aquired.
'12 - in my mind, an all around improved team from last season, but it ain't over. better bull pen. hitting looks improved, I'd like to see more power, but who wouldn't.

After weighing all the results I would say I'm on the train. I'd still like a hitting coach, though.

No, one weekend does not make or break a coach. 2 seasons of average baseball does though.

I didn't like the call for Hanover to bunt with 3 strikes in Fridays game. I'm assuming it was Manieri's call.

If you would have seen Mainieri's reaction and the arse chewing that Hanover got, then you know Mainieri did not make that call.

No, I didn't see that.
I realy hope Hanover comes out of this slump.
His glove is too good to be taken off of the field.
