I went and bought a cheap T-shirt that had an animated pic of an LSU lineman (#95, of course) holding his fists in the air. At the top it said, "The Magic is Back."

Woah! An animated t-shirt? I want one of those!

He and Miles are good friends. Were on staff together at Colorado. Dinardo was in Miles' wedding......or the other way around.

Dinardo is someone whom i'll always really like. He started the upward trend for LSU and no doubt brought the magic back a few absolutely crazy nights in Tiger Stadium.

Yeah, was it Bob McConnell? Guy was terrible and was previously our WR Coach, I believe. Probably was never an OC before or since. All in all I liked Gerry but he was damn stubborn and hard headed. Kinda like someone else I know of....

Bob McConnell literally coached my middle school football team right after getting canned from LSU. He showed us highlights of the 97' LSU v. FLA game to pump us up pregame.

Tim Couch throw for 500 and something yards against us in 1998.

490 of those were to Craig Yeast, or seemed like it, on bubble screens. F-ing Tepper and that ridiculous prevent defense scheme the entire. damn. game. So painful to watch that 98 team, as stacked as they were, lose 7 games, seemingly all of them by a TD or less and then bend over the West Champion that year (State), winning by 35

GD gets too little credit IMO, really did a ton of good things, it ended badly, but I thank him for helping us get to where we are now...

Saban definitely benefited from the work Dinardo did. Dinardo made it cool for LA kids to want to go to LSU again, and Saban milked that for everything it was worth. It's amazing how many guys Dinardo recruited are still in the NFL or stayed there for a long time.

I have always heard that Dinardo simply worked the player to death and that they had no legs during games.

But I always liked him and I just love it when someone comes to La. and falls in love with the place. How many coaches get fired and then stick around!!!

But I did meet him as he made a visit to his restaurant in Baton Rouge one time--was very friendly, posed for pictures with several customers and it was really nice to meet him.

I had a similar experience. The company I was working for at the time had a private party there, and we were in a private room. DiNardo came in to check on us, make sure everythihng was ok, etc. Seemed really nice.

He would love to be on the coaching staff. Said he is awe of the D. Said it hasn't been this good a D since his buddy Tepper was his Coordinator.

Yes, Coach Dinardo had the same downfall as other head coaches--excessive loyalty to assistants, esp. to Lou Tepper, former DC

While true, it was recruiting too many academic casualties that was his primary problem. During his last season in 1999, LSU only had around 58 players on scholarship. That’s like putting yourself on serious probation.

Actually, I think Bob was only a position coach at PBS. Dude was terrible.

Also, I think Gerry was somewhat bitter. I remember the articles he wrote for geaux.com to discuss SEC games during Saban's first year and every time he talked about an LSU win there would be something in there along the lines of "well had I gotten another year at LSU we'd be having a similar season" I believe I also read somewhere he couldn't watch the 2003 NCG because he felt that could have been him out there.

Nice guy though and laid the foundation to help us get where we are today, but he wasn't going to be the guy to get us here.. Thank God for Emmert forcing that worthless Joe Dean to fire him

I was able to spend a good bit of time with Dinardo during the '96 Season. I always felt like he was a genuinely nice guy and truly appreciated the school, traditions and fans. It is a unfortunate that things didn't work out the way he would have liked, but I really feel like he left us much better than he found us.

FWIW, I also spent a very short time with Pelini, and a very short time is still too long...

Wait...what?

Yes, you heard that right. He was substituting at Broadmoor High school around 99-00. History I think it was. I just saw him walking down the hall one day. It was odd. Thats where LSU's program was back then I guess. He wasnt getting paid very much at LSU I assume to need a PT job after he lost his job at LSU. Or maybe he just liked to teach.

Who can forget the famous "Read and React" defense with the drop linebacker!?! Who knows what would have happened had he not been so stubborn and loyal to his two main assistants, mainly Tepper. And to thInk, watching the Indy bowl Tepper's first game as DC, I actually thought it looked like a good hire. Boy, that couldn't have been further from the truth!
