Parking charges = end of tailgating as we know/knew it??

a blog from a relatively new LSU fan from the northeast.
we lived through season one with parking charges but year 2 changes probably just indicate more change on the way.
i'm sure if it doesn't affect you, you don't care.

tailgating did diminish, despite what herb vincent says.

yeah, i like herb, but he's gotta toe the company line.
i'm willing to see if this year has more meaningful home night game (bama will be huge no matter what) and what tailgating is like for them. last year's all day games probably played a part.

What was the reasoning behind the parking fees? Never heard
Posted on 3/16/12 at 10:00 am to TDTGodfather
$75 is a bit steep, but I do think that season ticket holders should get priority parking. Those folks contribute money to the program via cost of mandatory TAF fees + cost of tickets, as opposed to the "just here for the party crowd" who's major contribution for the weekend might be the 100 count of LSU dixie cups which are left strewn about the grounds following the game. I'm not opposed to people who just come out to tailgate, I just think that season ticket holders should take precedence over them.

Making money? I would've said to save the oaks, but we used that one to go up on ticket prices by a dollar back a few years ago.

Was it to cover the cost of cleaning up after the drunken animals that fling their shite all over the area then leave with out the slightest effort to clean up?

At such an exorbitant cost per game to park in these preference locations, I don't see why fans pay it. Highway robbery IMO.

as much as i hate those kind of fans, no.
although it was a convenient motive for the school to use.

i can only answer that question from a personal perspective and that is that we've tailgated in our spot since '95.

Not really. I think they said for the most part it costs LSU like a McDonald's cheeseburger meal or something. I mean they get convicts to come clean. I think the university side said they could be making all of this money, the athletic department did not come up with the idea. That being said what I bring in I either put in the numerous trash cans or pack it out and throw it away at home.

and here come the entitlement folks,again..
overall LSU is the 3-5th most expensive parking in SEC (depends on where you park, but do not let facts get in the way here) and yet we have the 1-2nd best program, does ANYONE really think that the whole AD is SO stupid or smart that they are raising prices (in 13% of the lots btw) to rip everyone off and keep for themselves..I will tell you what, you are all SO special and because you are such great LSU fans and better than all of us, just send me your bills and I will pay them so you can park free and we can continue to have a top program. You all DESERVE to pay less than anyone else...

I get this is the obvious answer, but its never been an issue before. No way the trash problem skyrocketed in the past 2 years

I wish people could debate these things in an honest, direct way, instead of the silly rhetoric...
* It will change tailgating..already has
* Fees are designed to raise money, the cleaning up excuse is just silly
* The increased fees are necessary for LSU to remain competitive in the nonsensical ESPN semi-pro world of college football
The problem is not LSU, our fees are reasonable compared to other top tier SEC schools. The problem is the no-limit arms race in college football where everyone benefits except the fans and the schools...ESPN wins, coaches win, players win, administrators win, trainers win, construction companies win, secretary to the assistant for administrative development win, non-fans win because then can now watch games they don't care about on TV, etc etc.
only 'real' FANS AND SCHOOLS LOSE.....The quantity and quality of the product does not change, but we pay 10 times what we did 20 years ago. The quality has actually gone down as fans now have to watch and listen to commercials during the game where we did not years ago. Money pours into the athletic problem, but none, of any substance get to the school itself. With the billions of dollars that go to athletic departments, almost all still have to be subsidized by the schools....
I enjoyed going to games MUCH more in the early 80's without the expenses and commercials that we now have to endure.
It is an college football problem, not an LSU problem.

you're totally right, we don't charge for parking, we don't win 13 games last season. and to think, if we'd just charged a little more we'd have a NC.
i don't mind going from free to $15-20 and gradually incurring raises through the seasons, but starting at $40 just means it'll be $100 by 2020.
should parking be more than a face value ticket?
there are other revenue streams (like beer sales mentioned in the article) that can be explored.

Is this because of parking fees or a minimum of night games last year?

i think both, but this season could bring a better sample of night games so we'll see.

In my honest opinion, I do not think 100% of the money is going towards the athletic program as we were making plenty before hand and the trash excuse is...trash. I honestly think its a way to earn some extra income for the school which I have no issues with as we are hurting badly financially.
