The question relates to the power of the sheriff over other governmental bodies, not whether the DA really needs automatic rifles

Are the DAs in LA not elected?

Wow this thing still going?
Look guys sometimes ADAs come out in the field but it isn't often and it would be until after the scene would be secure. I am not saying a DA doesn't go on patrols and assist with arrests, I've just never seen that happen.
Sometimes they will come out on the scene of a homicide so they can get a better mental picture of what happened which will aide them with the prosecution.
Hope this helps.

The DA's actions obtaining the weapons don't make sense. For example:
The explanations given by the DA why they need semi-auto rifles aren't sufficient.
At the time of the application, the DA's office doesn't realize these are fully automatic weapons?
DA's office realizes it's obtaining weapons for which his staff is not trained to use, is not trained in tactics and is not trained to maintain or repair the weapons. These are all things the Sheriff's Dept could've done. Who does the DA think is going to do this if not the Sheriff's Office?
I really didn't understand this quote from the most recent link.
"Scott said the remaining guns — including two AR15s and .30-06 rifle with a scope — in possession of his agency are secure and could be destroyed."
Does this mean the DA's office already has two AR and a scoped 30-06 rifle? If so, what in the world does the DA's office need a scoped 30-06 for??
The DA's office claims a long time employee like Ashley wouldn't be aware of the "Violent Crimes Unit?"
One thing's for sure, this is more than a dust up. If the controversy could be remedied by a behind the scenes talk between the Sheriff and the DA, the story would've never made it to the newspaper. The Sheriff is major mad and a long-time DA's Office employee is poised to become a whistle blower.

Yeah and Lea Hall is starting to look like he's gonna be the one told to jump on his sword if it gets more heated.
This ain't even close to over. They fricked up. The real question is WHY???? Seriously, why the frick does the DA's office need a deer rifle and some M16's and ARs? No reason whatsoever.
I'll bet before this is over we see pics of that 30-06 leaning on a deer in south Texas with the DA smiling his arse off.

faxis,
I had not seen the article you linked. According to the article, Mr. Hall w/ the DA's office is one of those from the DA's office that has been commissioned w/ arrest powers by the Sheriff's Office. What do you think are the chances that commission is revoked?

Will depend on Prator and which way the winds are blowing with the DA. Politically, this is leverage. Big leverage. And Prator is a sharp politician.
We'll see how hard this gets investigated. If the DA caves, and it looks like he's already done that, this may not go anywhere.
