Corey Smith DE From New Orleans

Several schools are taking a look at a DE out of New Orleans named Corey Smith. He goes to O.P. Walker High School and is listed as 6'6" and 235 lbs. Anybody here know anything about him as I couldn't find much on the Internet? If so, how does he compare to McFarland and Lathan from West Monroe?

Haven't seen anything on him film wise but I have heard very good things about him. Even heard some faint talk of him being a guy our staff is watching closely. Obviously he's got a great frame but from what I hear he is a good athlete as well and is rising up some prospect lists. I'll be interested in watching his status over the spring eval period.
Without seeing film of Smith I can't accurately compare to McFarland and Lathan but I can say that TCU made out like bandits with those 2. McFarland kind of is what he is. Much lower ceiling but is just good and plays with a good motor. Lathan is the star if he can be motivated. Kid has All American in the SEC potential but just doesn't get it yet. Superstar talent with a bum's work ethic and motor. If Patterson can get through to him then a star is in the making.

This player sounds like a sleeper then. If you come across some film later on, let me know. Do you know if he has been invited to any LSU Junior Days or visited?

Will do and as far as I know he hasn't been to any LSU events but it's really hard to tell. We don't usually get full lists of visitors from our insiders and his name wasn't one to watch at that point so he could've been there but we'd never know it.

With so many recent recruits at OP Walker, there's got to be footage of him somewhere. It may not be focused on him, and it may not be his best plays, but there should be something.
It is a little surprising his name hasn't come up sooner though.

What is interesting about his film is that most of it he is playing at DT. He seems to have a pretty good first step and am sure he would do better at DE. The issue I see right now is that his tackling technique seems to be hit or miss as he has a habit of running by the tackle rather than breaking down and making the tackle sometimes. He also will need to get stronger but that is the case with most players.
He does seem to have pretty good speed so a weakside DE (or speed pass rusher) or possibly a receiving TE could be positions for him at the next level.

Pretty good film. Looks like he has good strength in the lower body for his frame. His best plays IMO were when he set his base wide and held a blocker or two at arms length before disengaging and making the play. Based on that film alone, not sure he showed the speed to be an end rusher at LSU right now. Also did not appear to really be 6'6", just compared to all the guys he was playing with and against. I wonder how much weight he can gain?

I am sure his height and weight aren't accurate. I bet he is closer to 6'4" and 215 or 220 but he looks like he could put on at least 20 to 40 lbs in college at least which would put him around 240 to 250. That would be enough to be a speed pass rusher.
I was comparing his film to McFarland's film and he seems faster but not as strong. Of course, it is harder to gauge the speed and strength because Smith is playing DT in most of his film. I wonder if he will get moved out to DE this year more.

He does look fast and tall, but every shot of him in the film is of him fighting through one on one blocks. All of them look smaller than him and slower. Would love to see how he does against some double teams or just a big time lineman. He looks like he would be best suited to play DE.

Curtis Johnson has been on the grind this offseason. I hope he can get Tulane competitive again. It'd be nice to have a legitimate in-state rival. (Of course not to the point where they are stealing recruits from us 
)
