Having both in most of the waters I fish, I usually can tell by the fight before I ever lip the fish.

But the best way IMO is the top 2 fins on the back.
If they are pretty well connected its a Spot, if they separate or nearly so...Largemouth bass

There mouths are different as stated and most spots have a little spur or rough spot on their tongues

If you've caught a lot of either, you'll quickly notice the differences when you catch one of the other species. The mouth and markings will be noticeably different.

Maybe this will help: LINK
Those little rows of spots, just above the belly, running from "gill to tail" are one indicator.

They just have a different look to them. Too long and slender with too small a mouth for a large mouth of the same size. In addition to the other mentioned things, spots feel more rough. Like the difference between a smooth and keeled scale grass snake. It's just too bad the ones we have in La/Tx are so small. I almost never catch one over 13".

Probably Chain Pickerel he's talking about. I've caught only 2 in my life. Both outside of Morgan City. Common name is Grass Pike, but the actual name is Chain Pickerel.

The only fish Alx caught yesterday on Indian Creek was a chain pickerel. Pretty common up here in the impoundments.
