I think Chavis would get pissed at him for making unauthorized offers to kids

You have to understand how difficult it is to get kids from MS. It's not as simple as the programs suck. There is a lot more involved with those kids. 1 thing is grades. A lot of kids are questionable academically. Another is OM's money men. They get who they want if the kid is willing to take it. State pride is another. Those kids know each other very well for the most part and like to tie together at one of the MS schools. Very few of the top guys get out of MS. We have tried unsuccessfully 2 straight years to get the best player in MS and lost both to OM. The premise of hitting MS hard is great but the reality is rather bleak.

Imo FL is the same concept. We don't need FL. It's good to get a kid or 2 every year but not necessary. Chavis will require someone that is top shelf as a coach over a top shelf recruiter. He can't run his scheme without good db play. It's the most important part of our defense. A top shelf coach and recruiter would be gravy but those guys are hard to find.

I just think LSU should focus on Louisiana, East Texas and Miss more than anywhere else.

"Miss" is just such a big area. That's like ArKansas getting someone to recruit "Louisiana" you're not going to be able to take the cream off the top of Miss every year. Besides, most of those kids are closer to the Miss schools. If we could get most of the kids out of Mobile each year, I'd think we'd do just as well as if we got a good amount of Miss talent. Besides, we already do ok (not great, but ok for OOS) in Miss.

Man the spinning is insane in this thread. Cooper is top 2-3 as a db coach in the country. That means 1 or 2 guys nationally are better or on par with him.(in college).Duane Akina at Texas is one of them and we're not getting him. The other is Saban and we're not getting him. Nowhere to go but down. As a recruiter, all is fair but not his coaching or evaluating. Look at the kids he found just for LSU. Claiborne,Jalen Collins and David Jenkins. Derrick Raymond in the last class. Then you have his years at South Carolina. His dbs were the best part of those teams. He will be hard to replace in that regard. It's easily possible because of the talent on the roster and coming in but he's good and not just a "meh" loss.

He is another guy I would like to have on the staff. He could help recruit the Laffy area and working under Bo Pelini is a plus!

That is my thinking. I don't see how LSU can go up with this hire. Unless they get a guy who is a homerun recruiter and can coach. About the only way because maybe he'll help us land elite recruits in other positions...

In January 2011, it was announced that Akina would be leaving the Longhorns to be the defensive backs coach at the University of Arizona. One month later, his replacement at Texas, Jerry Gray, left the Longhorns to become the defensive coordinator of the Tennessee Titans. A few days later, Akina announced that he would be returning to Texas to resume his defensive backs position with the Longhorns due to family considerations

Sounds like we could get him if we wanted ($$$)

Are you?

The position coach sells the university, not themselves. Does a player have a hat with the coaches names that recruited him?

I understand what you are getting at, that there are relationships built and that sometimes players will follow recruiters to other jobs (like the Cal fiasco this year) but I think you are over-reacting a bit

These kids aren't like you and I, they don't pop wood when they hear pregame. Sorry, but they do commit to coaches, usually the assistant coach that is recruiting them and/or will coach them

The relationship and thought that, "man, this guy is cool as hell and can get me to the NFL" is a huge factor

Well at least we can hire someone lilgrovel approves of now.

We know he hates punctuation so that has to be one characteristic of the new coach.

Has Raymond even proven enough at Nebraska though? I mean, he has only been there a year or two. I'm not familiar with his recruiting ability. If he can recruit, then I wouldn't mind him.
