It appears to be a trailing 12 month ratio but I'm not 100% sure of that. Whatever it is, it's good enough for me to decide if I want to add a company to my watch list.
i was using yahoo's stock screener to look up yields. when i looked up the symbol on yahoo i would get something different on some of them, usually lower. looks like the yahoo website might be trailing.

how about MO ?
Yep, that's a good candidate.
My only reservation is the tobacco issue. I'm no prude but having lost both parents to smoking related diseases, I'm just not sure I can own a company that receives a large percentage of its profits from selling tobacco products.
It's a personal issue, not a financial one.

Much like why I have never owned GS.

MRK
I have SO on my watch list and might buy it within the next month or so, although with its recent price run up its yield is barely above my minimum threshold of 4%. I'm waiting for a significant pull back before I buy.

Agree totally, but in fairness, your requirements almost force you into concentrations.
PCL would give you a little more diversity.

And now you know why I started this thread!
You are correct. The pharms and energy or electrical generating companies dominated the yield screener program I used (along with what seems like every REIT company in existence).
quote:I'm going to add that company to my watch list, but it's showing a payout ratio of 141%. I'll watch it and get more familiar with it (I've never heard of it until this thread) and see what happens.
PCL would give you a little more diversity.
If you have some personal background info about PCL I'd liked to hear it.
Thanks.

Run a dividend strip portfolio, with companies with a little lower yield but get 12 quarterly dividends per 12 months.

but get 12 quarterly dividends per 12 months.

Co. A, record date of 1/15, 4/14, 7/15 & 10/15
Co. B, record date of 2/15, 5/15, 8/15 & 11/15
Co. C, record date of 3/15, 6/16, 9/15 & 12/15
Purchase A on 1/1, hold until 1/31 & sell, Purchase B on 2/1, hold until 2/28 & sell,
Purchase C on 3/1, hold until 3/31 & sell, and now repeat for the next quarter. Since you day traded this will be slow as a sun dial.

what about VOD?
I don't think you've got a telecom yet and they've got a payout ratio of 54%
of course I don't know anything about this shite, I just poke around on this board to see if I can accidentally learn to become a millionaire.

I know this probably doesn't fit your requirements, but have you considered any of those canadian O&G trusts ? I tend to view them as less risky than their yield indicates and have made decent money on them in the past :
Baytex Energy (BTE)
Enerplus Resources Fund (ERF)
Pengrowth Energy (PGH)
Penn West Energy (PWE)
Provident Energy (PVX)

Should have bought some more shares, I don't even know if that was worth the transaction fee.

Glad to see you taking my advice old friend !

I tend to shy away from all utilities just because they are at the mercy of politicians (PSC, for example) for their profits.
Plus, I personally think (this is just my perception, not based on any empirical data) that Entergy is a terribly managed company. They are constantly going before the PSC asking for rate coverage of their "mistakes." My personal experiences with them after Gustav last year taught me they can't find their butts with both hands.
Glad to see you taking my advice old friend !

Nah, they just knowingly f over individuals, institutions, and countries to line their pockets, much like cigarette companies lying to consumers for decades in regards to what cigarettes would actually do to their health. Same ilk, similar reasoning.
