I feel like the excitement is dwindling with MMOs as consoles make advances....or is that just me?

MMO's are to stuck on the WoW system. Every game wants two sides like alliance vs horde and you have to cater to people who play pvp and the people who play pve. It leads to many unbalances and problems between the pvp people and pve people. Also it cuts your community in half on the server on who you can group with.

There are more people playing MMO's now than ever before.

there hasn't been an innovative, well received mmo in a long time. The market is wide open for a new one to step in and take over WoW's spot but nobody has stepped forward yet.

what company with a good budget is willing to take a risk nowadays on an mmo? They are barely taking risks in console games. The people willing to take a risk don't have the money to compete with the big boys.

I don't consider pvp to be real pvp when its in controlled areas or on certain servers/shards only. That's largely how it exists today in MMOs.

Anyway, no they aren't dying. If anything, I actually think the MMO playing community is spread thin across too many games and shards/servers within those games.

I agree. Someone take UOs general gameplay and stick it with current graphics please. I would probably get divorced.

This is 100% spot on.

Some will say WoW is innovative, some say it wasn't, I'm going to call it innovative just because of how Blizzard turned an MMO into one of the most popular games of all time.

Companies are too afraid to make something different and improve WoW's model. Instead, we get stuck with gimmicks like SWTOR's storytelling system that might be "good" but is not enough to ask for $15 a month. The gaming industry has had a long time to make something better than WoW, but they've failed in every way possible.

Why do we need 2 sides, why do we need every MMO to be a no skill hotkey MMO, why do we need to copy WoW's talent trees and combat 100%.

It's a huge risk not putting pvp into your game. That can be a huge drop in your customers. I'd want a new PVE based mmo with a system to ban macros from being used.

even if it's not a pvp server the game has to make "balances" based off of pvp unbalances which hurts the pve game and vice versa. It's like well this class heals too good for pvp. Well now look they are useless for pve because they can't heal well enough.

One thing I loved about Star Wars Galaxies, is that you made a real impact on the game.

You built a house, and it was there. Everyone could see it. They could also steal your shite, if you didn't bother to build defenses.

You built a farm, with resource collectors, etc.

And each planet was so huge, you could hide your shite pretty well.

I can imagine the nightmare that is for coders, though. That's why it's all about instances now.

I liked the open world dungeons eq1 had where people had to fight for their bosses.

Every time I got to the level cap, they raised it with a new expansion. It's probably because I played too many toons.

They had a free-play week a while back. . .I logged onto my 3 old accounts. I used to 3-box several different configurations.

After being off for a while and looking at it. . .I remember thinking, "How the frick did I use to do this?"

When I went to the renaissance festival (yes go ahead make fun of me) I met a guy who 8 boxed(and no it wasn't me). He said he played on 3 comps at once.

DAOC was really cool for a while and they did some stuff that really changed the game a bit... but it just faded big time. The problem with MMO's is that it can get frustrating as hell when you jump in as a newb and people are rolling top lvl characters of every class on the reg.

I'm different whenever I play an MMO I need at least 3-5 friends to play with and lvl up with. I could care less if a lot of the community is already max level. Trying to play an MMO solo is just not worth it.
