in talking with some of my Aggie friends im starting to think that the Sumlin hire could be bad news for tiger fans.

they all agreed that it was time for the stereotype coach from A&M to go, old out of touch white guy. They are thrilled that they now have a younger minority coach who can go into Houston and Louisiana and sell the black players on A&M. Lets face it, anyone who has been to College Station knows its a tough sell for any inner city kid, i wouldnt call it the best looking town or campus, and im sure the smell of shite doesnt get them too excited.

now that they have a coach who the kids can relate to will go a long way in their favor IMO. Now with them getting Golden and Im hearing hes already on a bunch of LA kids for 13, its going to be interesting to see where he takes the program.

I still say thats a trap game next year in CS.

I'm not worried about Sumlin just yet. but it does seem like he's put together a nice staff, and his offense should be attractive to offensive recruits. even if it's not as wide open as it was at Houston, he's still gonna put a premium on putting up points.

the whole black coach thing I think gets overblown. will it help A&M's rep? sure, especially with a guy like Sumlin who seems charismatic as opposed to just any back coach like the grandfatherly Croom. but we got a handful of black coaches on our own staff who kids can "relate to" (and it sounds like maybe another on the way with the new WR coach), and kids haven't seemed like they've had a huge issue relating to Les.

that said, it'll be interesting to see how Sumlin does. he's a guy I've had an eye on as LSU's next coach when Les leaves.

I think Sumlin is potentially a big hire for TAMU, particularly as a recruiter, but he's going to have to win and win early in order to keep the momentum going. He's starting off behind the 8-ball with Tannehill and Fuller gone. He'll have some talented backs returning, but a lot of other skill position guys that are going to have to hit the ground running against SEC defenses.

I have a feeling that TAMU is going to resemble a poor man's Arkansas for the next couple of years, and that's when we'll find out how good of a recruiter Sumlin can be.

That thought process worked out well for the minority coach at Miss State and for Randy Shannon. Just because you hire a minority coach doesn't mean he'll get all the good players and win all kinds of games.

Black coaches are no different from white coaches. If you're good, you win, and if not, you get fired. If Sumlin starts winning games and putting guys in the NFL on a regular basis, then you begin to worry.

He may get a recruiting bump, not because he's black, but he's a new face and TAMU is now in the SEC. CS/B isn't going to look and feel any different with him at helm as anyone else.

Let's face it, you have to recruit but at the same time, he is going up against LSU and Texas. He won't have an easy job any which way. His Houston team did pretty well, but when it counted, they laid a big fat egg to USM.

But for TAMU, his hire was great timing. He seems to be an up and coming coach, as there are many of them around. He'll do well, be now he's in the SEC and things just got a lot tougher for TAMU.

The black thing may work for a 2 and 3 star, but the better players will be looking for more than the color of his face to decide on where to go...

Sumlins a very good coach and could be dangerous. I wouldn't be concerned just yet. They need to have a winning record in the sec before they talk. I hope the program falls back so we can recruit the Houston area.

Right now, we've got Wilson & Haley. Wilson's an unproven commodity outside of Louisiana, & Haley's only good for about 3-5 kids per year, of which a % of that pan out into commitments.

Stud, Ensminger, Krags, Cooper, & Chavis are all pretty much non-recruiters, though some of them are decent talent evaluators. Miles is a head-coach type & he's great.

But we're spread real, real thin. We need to replace Steve Ensminger & hire not only a WR Coach but another up-and-comer to coach our TE's that can beat the streets, because we can't have Wilson do it all for us.

Miles has Wilson spread too thin with the amount of non-recruiters we've got on staff.

so is the former UNC WR coach still in the mix to be our WR coach? and has there been any thought given to doing what you said re: getting a new TE coach/ recruiter?

winning some games we shouln't early and defensive recruiting will be key to make a big spash in the years to come. hard to tell how well we will really do next year but he is recruiting pretty well since he took office.

ten years ago college station was the whitest major college in the US... i spent a year on campus there... seemed like 45,000 white students and 1,000 african-americans.

if you review Texas top 100 for recruiting you'll see there are very few schools outside of Texas and the Big xii recruiting well in texas... my thought is the move of missouri and a7m to the SEC will result in MORE recruits leaving texas to go to other SEC schools.

Sumlin does not change the a&m dynamic; he isn't swooping into Louisiana to take LSU players - keep moving - nothing to see here

Negative ghost rider. Daje is a freak athlete but isn't the player that TJ is. Don't go full retard because you lost a recruit to CKS

Alright Big Kat We will see! How you think that spread and jv D Sumlin runs will do in the SEC West against top dogs like LSU and Alabama?

verdict is out on aTm. If Sumlin gets into aTm and they have a really good season and pull an upset or two, I would say watch out. If he gets in the SEC and falls flat on his face at 6-6 or worse, then they are going to be spiralling down.

Right now, Sumlin can sell Keenum and his record at Houston, new face, new agswagg movement, etc. and all that works if you win. If aTm (who is in a rebuilding year) goes 6-6 or worse, which is what many aggie fans think, then all of Sumlin's momentum will slow down and it will be another middle of the pack SEC school trying to pull recruits from LA.

I'll start worrying about Sumlin when he shows me what he can do with a rebuilding team, becasue without Keenum 2 years ago, he went 5-7.

first mistake....and, for what it's worth, not many aggie fans around here think that the Sumlin hire was that special. time will tell.

the Sumlin hire doesn't mean shite. what will impact LSU is now having to recruit against tam for texas/houston kids who want to play in the SEC. I was never in favor of the gumps who run the SEC allowing tam to flank us. it is what it is and we will have to deal with it.

typical aggie bullshite....two yrs ago Sherman was all that and a bag of chips. to a man, every aggie I know, said his conservative (white) ideals and leadership was far superior to LSU's dredlocks and Les letting the kids be kids. we all know how that worked out for them.

we have just as many african-american coaches who have just as much ability when it comes to players relating/bonding to their mentors.

every game for LSU IS A TRAP GAME! when your program is as visible and as successful as ours....you get everybodies best shot.
