Best episode of your favorite show

Inspired by the Av Club Q&A today..

What is the best episode of your favorite show? If you were trying to get someone into your show, what would you show them to hook them in?
I’ve got two answers, a comedy and a drama.
COMMUNITY: “Cooperative Calligraphy”. It’s everything I love about the show in one episode. It’s meta and self-conscious, as Abed constantly reminds them they are in a bottle episode, even though there’s no rational reason for them to not leave the study room. The characters play off each other brilliantly, and a simple, realistic story quickly spirals out of control into something still tethered to reality, but barely. It gets insane quickly, but it gets there honestly. The episode is funny as hell and has Allison Brie in her underwear. Oh, and it has a monkey. Monkeys rule.
HOMICIDE: “Crosetti”. Until The Wire, Homicide was the greatest TV show ever, and it still has a case for best show on broadcast TV. There’s loads to love about the show, but the show hit its peak early. And no episode was as gut-wrenching and relentlessly bleak as “Crosetti”. Crosetti’s body turns up in the harbor, and all evidence points to a suicide. However, Lewis cannot accept his partner took his own life, so he runs an independent investigation to prove Crosetti was murdered, undermining Stan every step of the way in his investigation. Lewis becomes increasingly disconnected from reality as pretty much all of the evidence points to suicide, yet he cannot accept the simple truth. The episode’s conclusion is still one of my favorite moments in television. The bosses refuse to give Crosetti a funeral with dress blues (essentially, a “dishonorable” funeral) and Pembleton spends the entire episode being the prima dona he always is: aloof and unwilling to go to Crosetti’s funeral. He does show up, and he does so in a way to give the bosses a gigantic middle finger. Just one of those ways working stiffs get back at the injustices of their job. Fifteen years later, I still get choked up just thinking about the episode.

LOST: Through the Looking Glass. This is just a perfect episode and maybe the greatest twist in television history. Every character is on the line in some form in this episode and they balance all the stories well: Jack's trek to the radio tower, the beach trap, the Looking Glass Station, and Ben and Locke attempting to stop Jack from making contact with the freighter. Somehow each character has a great moment in the episode. And finally the flashback.... Jesus. It takes 72 episodes worth of formula and they turn it completely on its head. That move took a lot of balls and proved that LOST still had its magic, despite many jumping the ship.

The Wire - "The Buys"
Introduces the world to Omar Little and would hook ANYONE on that show.

BATTLESTAR GALACTICA - '33'
There isn't a more intense hour of TV to be found anywhere. You have a great introduction to the characters, the imposing threat that will drive the rest of the show, the dominant emotions of wandering lost and being chased. I mean, the show is about the virtual extinction of the human race and the will to survive, and they parallel that brilliantly with a plot driven by the need to escape every half hour, over and over and over again. This is exactly what happens for the rest of the series. Escaping and being found, both literally and figuratively. And they use a climax that again, foreshadows the kinds of decisions that will have to be made to save humanity, sometimes destroying it to preserve. Exciting, infuriating, exhausting, exhilirating. Perfect television.

I liked the episode of Firefly where there were 3 storylines going on at the same time, one of which was how the crew came together.
Community's bottle episode is one of a few of theirs that's always good for a rewatch!

like you, Community is my go-to
It's just a great episode with splendid homages. I remember thinking it was one of the funniest things I had ever seen. It has a re-watchable factor, as do most episodes, but so much so that they rebooted it, if you will, in the second season. If I showed this episode to a friend and they didn't like it, we probably wouldn't be friends anymore.
quote:not necessarily the best episode, but my favorite episode is Advanced Dungeons & Dragons. I have never once played d&d, but just enjoy this episode. From Britta being terrible, to Annie being Hector the well endowed, to Troy yelling huzzah, to Pierce cheating like a sonofabitch, it just pleases me.

quote:The episode by which, imo, the first season is identified: Modern Warfare.

The office- michaels farewell episode. Absolutely great way to end his run on that show.
Hopefully someone would watch it and want to go back to the beginning and get involved with the characters

The Wire- Final Grades (finale of season 4). Really shook me and left me thinking, as much as a television show can. The only episode that maybe hit harder was Sentencing from season 1.
