About Las Vegas and Restaurants

I haven't been to Las Vegas in awhile. Certainly a few years. We really did give restaurants a fair shot. The results were mixed. I found that the restaurants opened by chefs from New York, San Francisco and L.A. to be almost pale reflections of their originals. It even seemed in a couple of cases that the food was prepared in advance and that they were really trying to turn the tables too quickly. The experience wasn't uniformly terrible, but it was not a great culinary experience given the price.
One really good experience was on the west side at Rosemary's. At the time it was being run by people who had been with Anne Kearney at Peristyle in N.O. Food was great and we were treated like celebrities when they found out we were from New Orleans.
So, an update, please. What are the truly legit restaurants in Vegas? Either indigenous ones or ones opened by glamour chefs who actually make sure the places are up to par.

My personal favorite is Hugo's Cellar@ the Four Queens. Been there forever.

Some of my favorite meals in Vegas have been at the so-called knockoffs from New York. Number 1 favorite meal in Vegas (or most anywhere) was at Il Mulino in the Caesar's Forum Shops. Just a really cool experience. Thomas Keller's place, Bouchon, in The Venetian is really good too. I get what you're saying though; there are more Wolfgang Puck restaurnats in Vegas than Starbucks in Manhatten, and I'm not sure a shopping mall version of The Palm is what the founders envisioned. But when you go to Vegas you take all that silliness with a grain of salt - the Eiffel Tower is fake, but still fun to ride up and see the view.

I second Bouchon, ate there with a major picky foodie and it was very good.
As for the Hugo's Cellar, if you want the 1970's Spainish inspired interior steakhouse go for it but I can promise you will not like the atmosphere. A co-worker sent a syeak back 3 times as she wanted it rare-a cool center and they couldn't get it right.

I had my birthday dinner at Sage by Chef Shawn McClain and it was outstanding. It's in the Aria hotel.
They have a $79 tasting menu, which I think is great to find in Vegas.. especially since it's 4 courses. They also have a $49 early evening 3 course menu.
Plus, the dining room is LSU colors!

As for not-so-great places, Sushi Samba was pimped all over Vegas and it was not that good and the portions were laughable. We spent a couple hundred dollars and left still hungry.

I guess I just have trouble considering Las Vegas to be a food destination or a true food city. It seems fine dining is there as an adjunct and it doesn't have to be top notch because of the other attractions.

I understand the sentiment that it's all a bit "artificial" but you can't deny how many 5-diamond awards or Michelin stars are strewn about town. Like I said earlier, my favorite restaurant in Vegs is in a shopping mall but it feels like you're in Sicily and the food is awesome so I look past the mall aspect. To a degree I think Las Vegas is certainly a food destination, simply for the fact that you can throw a rock and hit a 5-diamond restaurant (The Bellagio hotel has two, which is twice as many as the state of Texas).

Ellis Island Brewery... Great beer and rootbeer.
Pretty much everything is under 10 bucks. Plus it feels like you could be sitting next to the Rat Pack. LINK
We also went to Cheesecake Factory since there are NONE in Louisiana. Great service, really good food, out of this world cheesecake for a very reasonable price. In Caesar's Mall.
Lotus of Siam came highly recommended as the most authentic Thai restaurant in America. We ordered the wrong things. The people's food next to us looked delicious. Ours... not so much.
At the end of Friedmont street, just past the zipline and the Neon museum, there is a great piano bar called "Dont Tell Mama." There are these butchdyke bartenders that will sing along with the piano and blow your mind. Best free show in Vegas.
Have fun... dont lose your arse. The Circus Circus bartenders suck. The place is a relic though.

Picaso at the Bellagio is one of my favorite in the country. Not as pricy as some other restaurants. Tasting menu was $100 a person. Food is amazing and there is over 40 pieces or Picaso art and sculptures. You can't beat the experience.
